Ask the Pastor

A non-CLC reader asks, “In Matthew 27:52, it says “and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose.” Does the Bible give any more information on these saints who arose?  Where did they go? Did they continue living? Where were there spiritual bodies before they arose? Also, after Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, does the Bible say anything else about him?”

Wow….so many questions, and all so good!  Let’s try to answer them, one at a time:

1.  Yes, the full description is giving in the verse you quoted AND the next verse (Matthew 27:52-53).

2.  So, according to v. 53, they went into the city of Jerusalem where they appeared to many people.

3.  No further information is given anywhere else in the Bible, so we are left with 2 possible conclusions: (a) either they continued living until they died (again), or (my best guess, since Hebrews 9:27 says we’re all destined to die once), (b) they remained in Jerusalem until they ascended into heaven with Christ at the end of his earthly appearance.

4.  Before they arose, their spirits would have been in Abraham’s bosom, awaiting the resurrection, just like all of the righteous dead from Old Testament times.  (Some have speculated that these saints in particular may have been martyrs from Old Testament times, or possibly even saints who had seen Jesus, but died before him, such as Joseph, John the Baptist and others – but that is strictly conjecture since the Scripture doesn’t give us any clues as to their identity)

5.  Yes, in John 12:9-11 we read of Lazarus being at a supper with Jesus, and he (Lazarus) actually became the ‘attraction’ that brought many people to that dinner, as people had heard of his resurrection of the dead, and because of his testimony, many were believing on Christ – so much so that the leading priests plotted to kill him, too!

Hope that helps.  Now, what would YOU like to Ask the Pastor?

A day off AND a date night!

I have learned the hard way the importance of having a regular day off.  For too many years I was “too busy” to take a day to recharge my batteries one day a week – instead of realizing that the Sabbath principle is still valid for all of us today.

Most weeks, it’s pretty routine: Chris & I start the day slow, eat lunch out, and take in a movie or spend a couple of hours in a bookstore, browsing & relaxing.  We’re usually home before dinner to spend time as a family.  Not very romantic!

But today, after our usual leisurely pace, we’re getting all spiffied-up (that’s an Arkansas term) and heading downtown for a dinner date at the Cadillac Palace to see “Mary Poppins”.  Honestly, I’ve never seen any version of Mary Poppins and I’m not a big ‘live theater’ fan.  But Chris is excited about it, and I love her!

One thing I know much better than I practice: it’s important to keep the romance in your marriage!  So whether you’ve been married 4 months or 40 years, I would encourage you to pick a time and ‘date’ your spouse.  It’ll keep the sizzle in your relationship.  I’ll tell you all about our night out later……or maybe not.

Interesting follow-up from last Sunday…..

I know that many CLCers were surprised by some of the facts that Melva Lea Beacham brought to our attention in her message last Sunday.  It certainly wasn’t a “politically correct” message – but it is true.

That’s why I thought this news item I saw last night was particularly interesting – it seems a Muslim Imam in Great Britain is demanding that the Queen of England covert to Islam.  He made the statement while promoting a march in London in support of Sharia law.

Even more interesting is the video that accompanied the article, showing that Islamic street justice has now reached America.

The point of all of this is simple – and it’s NOT that Christians are anti-Muslim!  After all, Jesus died for the whole world, and millions of people around the world who once were followers of Islam are now coming to faith in Christ, often at great peril because of religious persecution.  That’s WHY at CLC we are specifically focused on helping to reach Muslims with the Gospel through our partners in Senegal, Turkey, Iraq, Ethiopia, Kenya & the Philippines.  Our job is not to ‘curse the darkness’, but to light a candle so that others can see!

I hope you’ll plan to be a part of our Missions Emphasis month by joining me this Saturday at 9am to learn how YOU can get from the marketplace to missions when David & Stephanie Paluskey share their story with us.  And don’t miss the International Dinner this Sunday, when you might win a 2012 Missions trip!

Bears Lessons

NOTE: I’m writing this with about 12 minutes to play in the 4th quarter – I couldn’t stand to watch any more.

I see ONE life-lesson very clearly in the Bears-Lions game on Monday night:

  • The doctrine of total human depravity is true!

As I understand depravity, it simply means that all men are deeply flawed – doing things they don’t want to do and finding themselves incapable of doing the things they truly want to do.  Furthermore, depravity means that we are hopelessly unable to change this in ourselves.  Our only hope is in a Savior!  And for a true life-lesson, I encourage every reader to fully place your trust in Jesus, for ONLY He saves!  (see Romans 3:23, Romans 3:11-12, Romans 7:18-19, Romans 5:8, and Acts 4:12)

Unfortunately, I don’t think there are Saviors in the NFL.  This season is over for the Bears, sports fans.  (Don’t forget you heard it here first.)

5 things you should know about going to ISRAEL with us…

Had a great informational luncheon yesterday with Melva Lea and about 20 CLCers who are planning to visit Israel with us next February!  Here’s the highlights for those of you who couldn’t make that meeting:

  1. Our travel agent, Madeleine Cohen of Bell Wholesale Tours has made this the most affordable trip to the Holy Land possible!  I’m serious.  Even Melva Lea Beacham, who has led dozens of these trips through the years told me she’d never seen a price this low.  (Part of the reason is that our travel agent locked-in fuel surcharges with Delta Airlines more than a year ago, whereas the fuel surcharges are normally added to the price of a tour, and can easily run $700-800/person!)  Consider this: we made virtually the same trip last November and it cost each CLCer $800 more than this trip!
  2. Our host, Melva Lea Beacham, is not only knowledgeable (having led so many of these tours), but I think she’s got the biggest heart for Israel & the Jewish people of anyone I’ve ever met!
  3. My wife and I will be sharing insights from the Scripture at various locations as well – so this is more than a tour of the Holy Land; it’s a spiritual feast, as the Bible comes alive before your eyes!
  4. We won’t just be sightseeing; we’ll also take time to really connect with our Messianic partners in the Land.  Since Israel is CLC’s number 1 priority in missions (“to the Jew first”, as Scripture says), this is probably my favorite aspect of the trip.  We’ll pray with Messianic believers in Jerusalem, visit a Bible School that’s training young Israeli’s to reach their own people, and (one of the true highlights), worship on the Sabbath with Rabbi Eitan Shishkoff and his congregation in the Galilee (they’ll worship in Hebrew while we enjoy simultaneous translation into English via our headsets!)
  5. As I explained to someone today, in all my years of doing missions (37 years now), I have never known anyone who truly wanted to go that was unable to make the trip for lack of finances.  Read that again.  Never.  I’ve known people who had one sponsor step forward to pay for their entire trip; I’ve known others who had a bunch of sponsors at $10, $20, $50, etc.; and I’ve known still others who received unexpected bonuses & salary increases that enabled them to pay for their own trip.  But I’ve never seen anyone fail to raise the funds if they truly wanted to go.  We can even help with that via a sample fundraising letter you can access here on our websiteDon’t let $2999 stand in the way of your life being changed through a trip to the land of Israel!

Interested?  The dates are February 22-March 2, 2012.  You can download the informational flyer here and the application here.  Next year in Jerusalem!

Weekend reflections

Probably just an age thing, but I’m finding more & more that 4 services on the weekend wipes me outHere are my random thoughts about this weekend before my brain shuts down completely here on my family room couch:

  • Great response to our first International Prayer Breakfast yesterday morning!  CLC is built on a foundation of prayer, and seeing so many of our intercessors come together to learn about praying for nations was inspiring to me.  Special thanks to my best friend & Terrilyn Franklin for planning & coordinating the breakfast, and leading us in some specific prayers, and to Melva Lea Beacham, who was our special guest all weekend.
  • Melva’s better-half, Jeff, was the featured speaker for our Men’s “Tailgate Party” (in case you’re wondering: there was no football game & no tailgate, but we did ‘party’ with some brats & burgers & dogs before Jeff spoke).  He challenged us all about real fatherhood and the need for God’s men to step up and make a difference in our families & our culture.  Good stuff!
  • CLC 1929 continues to grow each Saturday, as last-night broke 100 in attendance (plus they use some of the coolest, weirdest video clips I’ve ever seen).  If you’re a young adult (or just young at heart), CLC is the place to be on Saturday nights!
  • Today’s services in Tinley Park were unusual to say the least: worship seemed unusually anointed (and so fitting with the series), then Melva gave us an unusual amount of information to process, and despite my tension about the service lengths, we had an unusual response to the altar invitation, with at least 15 people praying to receive Christ after the last 2 services.  There were multiple members of two different families included in that number, and one of those families came to CLC as a result of our radio broadcast – so I’m especially excited about fruit from our radio efforts!
  • Pastor Doug had forewarned me that our South Bend campus was facing a number of challenges today due to absences from several of their key leaders (including all their musicians!), but his report after service was ecstatic: people worshiped to a CD and pressed in harder after God.  He then preached about unity & purpose & laid out some wonderful outreach opportunities the Lord is opening for them there.
  • At our Lisle campus Pastor Eric reports similar challenges, with several key leaders absent, plus the ongoing changes by the hotel management where they worship, but they closed out ‘Vintage Jesus’ on a high note with several testimonies of people who putting Jesus in His rightful place in their lives.  They closed the day with a sweet celebration of the anniversary of Pastor Kristen Stone’s 29th birthday!
  • As usual, the ‘best report award’ goes to our Philippines campus, where Pastor Herley says they had 825 in attendance, with 29 new people praying to receive Christ.  But get this: they conducted a men’s encounter like the one for women last week – and out of 85 men who attended, 74 were baptized in water.  Herley also says, “this is the first encounter we had where there were lots of demonic manifestations during the deliverance time, as most of those men were drug pushers, thieves, homosexuals & drug addicts….but all 74 of them were filled with the Holy Spirit & spoke in tongues!’  Several of those who received Christ in the evening service were parents or family members of the men from the Encounter!  I love what God is doing at our Davao City campus, and can’t wait to visit them again at the end of this month!  Enjoy a few pics from the Encounter & baptisms:

Ask the Pastor

My favorite questioner writes, “My next question is found in John 8 when they were trying to stone the woman for committing adultery.  When Jesus bent and wrote on the ground, what exactly did He write?  I know he told them that “he that is without sin let him cast the first stone, but is there anywhere in scripture that tells us what He wrote on the ground?”

Great question.  Fun question, because the quick answer is “NO, the Bible never tells us what He wrote on the ground that day”.  I say fun, because that lack of information hasn’t kept preachers & scholars from speculating ever since as to what He might have written.  For instance, some people think He merely wrote the 10 Commandments, and that the mob became convicted of their own sins as they read.  My favorite speculation is that he may have written the names of each person in the crowd, with a list of their sins beside their name!  I’ll guarantee if that’s what He did, I wouldn’t have waited around for my name, I’d have left as soon as I saw the pattern – no sense being embarrassed publicly!

Aren’t you glad that you’ve been forgiven through the blood of Jesus?  Thank God, His Word says our sins He will remember no more! (Heb. 8:10-12)

Hope that helped a bit.  Now, what would YOU like to Ask the Pastor?

coming home!

I’ve not posted since arriving in Pittsburgh because I haven’t had opportunity – seems like we’ve only been in church other than sleep & a few meals since we arrived Tuesday afternoon…..but it’s been a non-stop marathon of some of the most thought-provoking, soul-stirring, faith-building preaching I’ve heard in I can’t remember how long!  My pastor knows how to put on a conference!

We’ve still got 3 more sessions to attend tomorrow before Sam Hamstra & I catch our return flight home – as much as I’ve enjoyed the break, I’m ready to get back to my family and the work at CLC!

Can’t wait for this weekend – Melva Lea Beacham will be a special treat - so invite someone to be your guest this Sunday as she closes our Vintage Jesus series with, “Which Jesus Will You Follow?”

Hope to see you at the Int’l Prayer Breakfast or the Men’s Tailgate Party on Saturday – if you haven’t got your ticket yet, call the office NOW (708.429.7729)

Going to see MY pastor…

Still got some work to do this morning, plus a meeting with our pastoral staff, but then I’m headed to O’Hare for a quick flight to Pittsburgh to see my pastor.  Actually, it’s the annual “Presence” Conference hosted by Covenant Church of Pittsburgh, and there are a number of distinguished speakers who will be on the program – but the attraction for me is always Bishop Garlington.

October is officially “Clergy Appreciation Month”, but I don’t need an official proclamation from Focus on the Family (or anyone else)I just genuinely love & appreciate my pastor, and I want him to know it!

I’m sure I’ll have a chance to tell him so again this week, and I’ll enjoy another opportunity for him to rub off on me.  It’ll also be a chance to soak in the Presence of the Lord, see some long-time pastor friends, and even enjoy some extended fellowship with Sam Hamstra and Jon & Rachel Jones who are also attending from CLC.

I’ll return in plenty of time for a GREAT weekend coming up at CLC – if you haven’t yet registered for the special events this weekend, here’s your chance:

  • International Prayer Breakfast this Saturday at 9am -  you can register here
  • Men’s “Tailgate Party” with Apostle Jeff Beacham this Saturday at 12:30pm – register here
  • Israel tour (Feb. 2012) informational meeting this Sunday at 1pm – register here

Can’t wait!

Bears Lessons

I knew it was a bad idea to plan this as a regular weekly feature during football season.

I hate to disappoint any of my readers, but I didn’t get to see the game yesterday (well, a few plays near the end).  Sometimes even with a DVR, there just aren’t enough hours in the day.

But I do have one ‘life-lesson’ to share, based on what I’ve read & heard about yesterday’s win against Carolina:

  • Celebrate your ‘wins’!

Seriously.  Literally ALL that I’ve heard on talk radio since yesterday is what all the Bears did wrong, how poorly the defense played, how they couldn’t do anything to stop the rookie phenom Cam Newton, how our coaches can’t even manage the clock, yadda, yadda, yadda.  It all reminds me of me.

Seriously again.  I know that I’m guilty, and I know it’s also how a lot of pastors can be (and I suspect a lot of Christians as well).  We’re often SO focused on trying to improve that we fail to take time to savor our wins!

It happens all the time in churches.  We plan & prepare & promote special events, then they happen, and whether they were a huge success or a disappointing failure, we’re usually off & running to plan & prepare & promote the next special event, without taking time to congratulate our teammates, honor those who made extraordinary efforts, and just ENJOY the win for a moment.

I know it’s possible to rest on your laurels or believe your own press and all of that – but I’ve seen just as many leaders fail in the area of celebrating the good as I’ve seen get all proud and complacent.

So here’s the question for your life-lesson today: what ‘win’ has God given you or your family that you need to take a few moments to savor?

I know Monday night is coming and Detroit looks awfully good – but today, Chicago Bears, just celebrate yesterday’s ‘W’!

Anyone watch the game & discern any lessons we can all learn from?  If so, please share your thoughts below-

Weekend reflections

To say, “busy weekend” doesn’t do it justice – but here’s a recap anyway:

  • Friday night Chris & I attended the 40th reunion of my high school class in Jonesboro, AR.  It was great seeing everyone again even though I wouldn’t have recognized most without their name tag (which had their senior yearbook photo) – I’m sure it was the same when they looked at me!
  • Saturday we enjoyed a ‘McQuay’ reunion of sorts, as my sister & several nephews & their families & my niece came together for lunch & lots of laughter looking at old family pictures before we had to leave to catch our return flight.  Finally got home to bed about 1 a.m., which is VERY out of character for my weekend routine – but using the video message today really helped with that.
  • Speaking of video, I don’t have words to describe it or to express appreciation to our entire Creative Team for “Vintage Jesus: the Message”.  They spent literally hundreds of hours in production, but it surely paid off, as at least 12 people prayed to receive Christ at the Tinley Park campus today, not to mention the dozens who told me (often with tears) how impacting it was!  And we were all blown away by the TON of requests to purchase the DVD and/or the audio track CD!  (By the way, you can now order the DVD for $20 or the audio CD for $10 here)
  • MEGA-Kudos, props, thanks & congrats to our Media Director, Eduardo Marroquin and the entire team who made it possible: William & Melek Arevalo (cast), Caleb Baker (storyboard), Stephen Carpenter (Jesus!), Francis & Joshua Claudio and Christian Evans (videographers), Nancy Harris (cast), Brent & Jen McQuay (assistant directors), Megan Norris & Jason Tirado (cast).  A-w-e-s-o-m-e!
  • Pastor Doug reported that the South Bend campus broke into spontaneous applause at the end of the video, and that it was so hard-hitting that several came forward for prayer there.
  • At our Lisle campus, Pastor Eric says their attendance broke 150 today, with several returning guests as well as first-time attenders, and a powerful time in communion and the prayer for Jerusalem.  I love his description: “there’s such a joyous, expectant spirit here that seems to be contagious!”  Nothing like Big Mo(mentum) as John Maxwell says!
  • As usual, our Philippines campus takes the prize for their weekend report: Pastor Herley says their weekend began on Friday night with their ‘Women’s Encounter’ attended by 116 new women attenders(Are you ready for this?  ALL 116 were baptized in water and with the Holy Spirit! – see some of the photos below).  Their attendance today was 870 and another 10 people prayed to receive Christ!  He said the Presence of God was so strong when they prayed for the women to be baptized in the Holy Spirit that no one wanted to stop praying, and they finally had to force them to quit so they could begin the evening service!  (Sounds like a Book of Acts kind of revival to me!)  It’s harvest time in the Philippines!

  • Our CLC-1929 Director Sam Hamstra tells me that Saturday’s service was a WIN, despite battling audio & technical issues all evening, with more new folks visiting for the first time and everyone impacted by VJ:the Message!

Add a Bears win to all of this, and I call it a good day!

Perceptions of Jesus, day 5

Here’s the final devotion based on the “extra material” from last Sunday’s message at CLC.  I’m really thinking of doing this more often, IF you’re finding it helpful – so please leave your comments below.

For the final thought, please read Hebrews 13:8

That’s a simple verse, huh?

But just because it’s simple doesn’t mean we have it down.  Consider these thoughts with me:

  • Potentially, Jesus is everything today that He’s ever been in the past or ever will be in the future.
  • The obvious conclusion is that He can still do today anything that He’s done in Scripture: heal, deliver, set free, provide, dispel storms, bring peace, etc.
  • In fact, all of those names of God that we’ve alluded to in this message from ‘Vintage Jesus’ are STILL in affect today: Jesus IS Jehovah-Rapha (the Lord my healer); Jehovah-Shalom (the Lord my peace); Jehovah-Jireh (the Lord my provider); Jehovah-Ra’ah (the Lord my shepherd); Jehovah-Tsidkenu (the Lord my righteousness); El Shaddai (the God who is more than enough)….well, you get my point.
  • But (and this is a BIG but) – it’s only as true as our perception of Him!  If we see Him as our Healer, He is!  If we see Him as our Provider, He does!

So, one last time I ask, “how’s YOUR perception of Jesus”?  Has it changed in the last week as we have focused on Him?  Leave a comment below-

And whatever it takes, get to your nearest CLC campus this Sunday as we try something we’ve NEVER done before, to communicate as creatively as we possibly can, “Vintage Jesus: His Message”.  Trust me, you don’t want to miss this one!

off to Jonesboro

Chris & I will be boarding a flight at O’Hare in a little while as I return to my hometown for the first time since my mother’s funeral.  It will give me an opportunity to visit my siblings and their families since I wasn’t able to attend my oldest brother’s funeral a few weeks ago.

It’s also been on my calendar for almost a year now, because tomorrow night is the 40th reunion of my high school class! (Am I really that old?)

Get this: it’s actually been 41 years since I’ve seen any of my classmates.  When I completed my junior year of high school, I only needed one credit to graduate, and because I was so sure that Jesus was coming soon (back in 1970), I felt I really needed to get started in ministry – so I skipped my senior year and went to Bible College in Houston, Texas instead.  I completed that last credit by correspondence, but was then informed by the JHS administration that I would not be able to participate in the graduation exercises with my class, contrary to what my counselor had promised the year before.  I suspect that’s why I never got on the mail list for reunions at 10, 20 or 30 years – but Facebook came to the rescue for this one, and I decided to go!

It’s a strange mixture of excitement and wondering ‘why in the world am I doing this’ as we leave today – but I’m hoping for the best.

And we’re skipping out on the main event Saturday night because we just can’t miss this Sunday at CLC, and the most creative presentation we’ve ever made (I’m a LOT more excited about it than the 40th reunion, for sure!).  Would you take the time time time right now to invite someone to be your guest as we focus on “Vintage Jesus: His Message” – you won’t forget it, and it just might change your friend’s life!

Perceptions of Jesus, day 4

Today’s devotion based on “extra material we couldn’t fit into last Sunday’s sermon” takes up exactly where yesterday’s left off, so if you haven’t read that post, I suggest you do so first.  Then read the very next verses in Matthew 15:32-39 in the Message paraphrase.

Consider these truths with me:

  • Jesus wasn’t finished with themOr with you!  This may be the most important blog post I’ve ever written, because in my observation, too many believers settle into a routine after they have walked with the Lord for a time – where it seems like most of their experience with Him is in the past: “He saved me; He delivered me from stuff; He blessed my career or my marriage or my finances, and now I’ll just praise Him and go on with life.  I’ve even heard preachers say (and been guilty myself) – “if He never does another thing for me as long as I live, I’ve still got plenty of reasons to praise Him!”  And while I understand the sentiment, the fact remains: Jesus isn’t finished with you!
  • In other words, no matter how much He’s already done in your life, there’s still MORE to come!  The incredible miracles of healing listed in the previous verses of this passage were spectacular, but verse 32 declares “Jesus wasn’t finished with them!”.  Pardon me while I say, Hallelujah!
  • What else might He want to do for you?
  • In this passage, we’re told that Jesus HURT for them.  After performing such unbelievable miracles of healing, He still ached for the people.  Why?  They hadn’t eaten anything, and He didn’t want them to go home hungry!  Are you tracking with me?  Every need you have is important to Jesus!  He may have saved you, delivered you from sin, filled you with the Holy Spirit, healed your body and blessed your marriage – but He’s STILL concerned about your daily needs!  (I feel like saying, I’m preaching better than you’re reading right now!)  Selah.
  • You know the rest of the story.  He took the little they had to offer and multiplied it so that 4,000 men (plus women & children) were able to eat until they were satisfied, and still gathered up seven large baskets of food afterward.  They had more leftovers than they started with!  Why?  Because Jesus IS “El Shaddai”, the God who is more than enough!

Is your perception of Jesus changing as we focus on Him?  I’d love to hear from you below-

Oh, one last thing: it’s not too late to invite someone to be your guest for this weekend at any CLC campus when we pull out all the stops on the most creative presentation we’ve EVER tried – don’t miss “Vintage Jesus: His Message”!

Perceptions of Jesus, day 3

Before I continue with these devotions based on ‘extra material’ that we couldn’t fit into last Sunday’s sermon (as promised here), I just want to URGE you to invite someone to be your guest this weekend, for the most creative approach we’ve EVER tried to communicate the gospel, as we look at “Vintage Jesus: His Message”.  Trust me, you don’t want to miss this!

Now for today’s devotion, please read Matthew 15:29-31 in The Message.

Gotta love Eugene Peterson’s language of the man on the street:

  • Love the fact that “tons” of people came to visit Jesus – no doubt, each with their own perception of who He was & what He might do-
  • Especially glad that his ‘visitors’ brought others with them: described here as the paraplegic, the blind, the maimed, the muteall sorts of people in need!  I like that because (a) there are NO needs too big (or too small!) for Jesus (consider ‘parapalegic’ or ‘maimed’, and how we might view the likelihood of them being healed); and (b) because Jesus always welcomes all sorts of people in need!  May every CLC campus always attract people in need!  May we ever be a hospital for the broken instead of a museum for model Christians!
  • (my favorite) Note that the visitors “more or less threw them down at Jesus’ feet, to see what we would do with them”!  How would you describe their perception of Jesus?  Non-committal: ‘Wait & see‘?  Skeptical: “Let’s see what you can do, big guy“? Or just sincerely questioning: ‘what will you do’?
  • Regardless what their perception may have been, I love the next sentence: “He healed them” (period).  That’s because Jesus is Jehovah-Rapha!
  • Don’t overlook the results: “mutes speaking, the maimed healthy, the paraplegics walking around, the blind looking around“.  Selah.  Any one of those results today & we’d be on national news!  I’m really not so concerned that CLC become famous, but I would love to see the Name of Jesus exalted in that way, so I’m praying, “do it again, Lord”!
  • Afterward, they let everyone around them know that God was “blazingly” alive among them.  Sounds right.  Can we genuinely let folks around us in on that secret?

May this whet your appetite for MORE of the demonstration of God’s Spirit in your life, and at CLC!  What’s your perception of Jesus now?

Perceptions of Jesus, day 2

Last week I told you that we couldn’t fit into Sunday’s sermon everything we wanted to say, so here’s part 2 of the “extras”: start by reading Luke 13:10-17.

  • Some of our issues aren’t ours at all; sometimes our issues are caused by the enemy.  What area of your life has the enemy crippled?  Your finances?  Your health?  Your relationships? In what ways are you not functioning as God intends, because of the enemies hindrance?
  • Note the tender compassion of Jesus: He noticed her in the crowd.  He called her.  He spoke to her kindly (“dear woman”).  He proclaimed her healing.  He touched her.  And after 18 years of being bent double, she was instantly able to stand straight.
  • (my favorite) How she praised God.  (Don’t you wish you could see the video?)  Time-out.  I wonder if our worship matches our perception of Jesus?
  • The critics: there will always be haters around, and sometimes they even get into positions of leadership.  If you listen to them, you’ll either not receive what Jesus offers you, or, if you do receive, you’ll lose it after they talk you out of it.  I love how Jesus called them out!
  • Please note Jesus’ logic: it isn’t right for a child of God to be bound by Satan!  Selah.  It IS always right for a child of God to be set free!

When your perception of Jesus is right, your story will always end with rejoicing!  Remember: Jesus is Jehovah-Nissi, the Lord my banner (of victory over the enemy!)

Enjoy the rest of your day, knowing that Jesus thinks you’re dear!  And if these devotions are helping, would you leave a comment below-

P.S.

Bears lessons

Most Mondays I’m trying to find some “life lessons” using Biblical principles that I saw in the Bears game on TV the day before.  In all honesty, you see the game a lot better on a flat-screen, hi-definition TV than you do sitting in the nosebleed seats at Soldier Field.  So today I’m extracting one lesson from the Bears and two lessons from the fans near me in the stands:

1.  Integrity is part of winning!  There’s more to any game than just the scoreboard.  And probably we’ve all seen/known of ministers (for instance) who did much good for God’s people and the broader community they served, but because of their own moral failure or greed, all of that was lost.  It was disappointing where I sat to see some brilliant plays (that late touchdown on the punt return by Johnny Knox, set up by Devin Hester faking out the entire stadium, including the Packers was the most amazing play I’ve ever seen in all my years of watching football) called back because of dumb mistakes (penalties).  On both sides of the ball, the Bears made some great plays that were negated by careless or foolish actions.

2.  There are cheaper places to get intoxicated than Soldier Field.  (I doubt this lesson will help the gals who sat behind me, since they’ll likely not be reading my blog today, but I’m just sayin’ – if your only reason for going to the game is to get drunk, it would be much cheaper to go to a bar – and you wouldn’t even have to buy an expensive ticket first).  Another benefit would be that your inane comments that make it obvious you have no knowledge of the game of football would probably go unnoticed by the patrons of the bar, since they may be not as sloshed as you!

3.  The inability to complete a sentence without using a 4-letter word is a sure sign of a poor vocabulary.  Seriously.  The guy sitting beside me for the entire game obviously didn’t go to the same school that I did in Jonesboro, Arkansas – and I know I’m showing my age now – but I was taught that civilized people with a good vocabulary could express themselves without resorting to gutter talk and taking God’s name in vain.  (Maybe I should be sharing a lesson about anger management, because this guy was mad from the opening play until the final horn – and had no problem expressing his anger in words that would have made Chicago’s mayor proud)

I guess the Bears embarrassing loss for the second week in a row is affecting my normal genial self, too – so let me close by asking, “what lessons do you see in yesterday’s game?”  Please share with us below-

Perceptions of Jeus, Day 1

As promised, here is a devotional thought we just didn’t have time for on Sunday: first, read John 4:46-53.

  • note that the official perceived Jesus to be a Healer.  (It always starts with our perception of Him)  That’s obvious because after he heard, he went and asked Jesus to come heal his son.  What we believe about Jesus must translate into action.
  • Love how the Message paraphrase points out: “Jesus put him off”.  Not sure I really believe Jesus ‘puts us off’, but I know that life/circumstances/enemy often do!  (Surely you’ve been ‘put off’, delayed in getting what you need.)
  • But he wouldn’t be put off!  (That’ll preach!) Persistence is necessary if you’re to receive everything Jesus can do for you!
  • Notice how simply his answer came: no fanfare, no bombastic sermonizing, no drama, not even laying on of hands.  Jesus simply spoke: “Go home. Your son lives.”  If you need something from Jesus today, keep in mind that Psalm 107:20 is still true!  (Look at it in the Message, too)
  • (my favorite part) “The man believed the bare word Jesus spoke and headed home! Selah. (If you believe, act like it!)
  • The healing had been released the very moment Jesus spoke it!
  • As usual, Jesus had something greater in mind than just a healing: the household believed on Him!

What’s your perception of Jesus today?  What you see is what you’ll getIf this idea of publishing “extra material” is helpful to you, let me know – perhaps we can do it more often.  Just leave your comments below-

And if your perception is important, so is your grasp of His message.  That’s why our creative team is going ALL-OUT this weekend, to communicate more effectively than we ever have before in the history of CLC, as we focus on “Vintage Jesus: His Message”.  Don’t miss it – and better yet, invite someone to be your guest!

Weekend reflections

I’m gonna set a new record for brevity, but here are my random thoughts on this weekend at CLC:

  • Men’s Retreat at Camp Friedenswald was a manly-success!  Lots of great bonding, fun, God-moments & more – kudos to the entire team of leaders who put it together & all the guys who participated!
  • CLC 1929′s second service rocked again!  While there were fewer people in attendance, it was encouraging to see repeat interest from many & new interest from several guests.  Caleb & Summer Baker have recruited several new musicians to join the 1929 band, and Sam Hamstra really connected in the Vintage Jesus message - I’m proud of the whole team!
  • Our South Bend campus experienced a real flow of the Spirit from worship to prayer to the Word to prayer again with over 20 people in the altar, including about 10 teenage girls who were visiting, according to Pastor Doug.  He says people received healing & freedom!
  • I was at the Lisle campus today since Pastors Eric & Kristen were celebrating their 13th wedding anniversary & vacationing in Orlando, and it was a real treat to be back there for a Sunday service for the first time since our grand opening over a year ago.  I met a TON of first-time guests, and had several great conversations in the lobby afterwards about how the Word had connected with them.  The whole team did a terrific job in their pastor’s absence, and we had at least 3 people who prayed to receive Christ!  The highlight of the service was the testimony from Deanna Mason of her sister’s healing last week – Valerie had evidently contracted the West Nile virus and it had turned into encephalitis – and the doctors gave the family no hope for her recovery.  But Jesus intervened, and she was not only able to attend the service today, (just days after being in critical care) she drove herself there!
  • Since I was only in Tinley Park for the 8am service, I’m dependent on my wife’s report for the other services, and she’s so wiped-out from ministering at all 3 services plus praying with folks for over an hour in the altar afterwards that she hasn’t talk me much – but it sounds like it was a GREAT day at CLC!  Two different individuals who had already left the service came back inside to tell her of their instant healing: one woman had an eye infection that had caused both eyes to be swollen almost shut – and the swelling was completely gone after prayer (!), and another lady was so congested she could hardly breathe before service, but came back inside to report that she was completely clear, breathing normally after prayer!  If you received a healing from the Lord today, would you leave your comment below, so we can all rejoice with you?
  • Pastor Herley Montes reports another great Presence of the Lord in the services at our Davao City campus in the Philippines, and 31 people prayed to receive Christ there this Sunday!
  • I’m so EXCITED with anticipation for this coming weekend at each campus as we focus on Vintage Jesus: His Message.  I promise you: we’ve never tried anything quite so creative (or so risky), as we prepare to bring you the highlight of Jesus’ own teachings – don’t dare miss it!

As bad as it must have been for you BEARS fans to watch the loss on TV this afternoon, I can assure you, it was even worse being at Soldier Field today.  When my son Brent turned 27 a few weeks ago, the only gift he asked for was to see a game in person, so the whole family agreed to go together to buy him a ticket.  I didn’t feel it would be right to send him to a game by himself, so I reluctantly agreed to accompany him.  (I know; it’s a hard job, but someone had to do it).  I’ll have more to say tomorrow, but honestly, seeing them in person for only the second time in the 22 years I’ve lived in Chicago was NOT fun, due to the outcome – but it gives me greater appreciation for Jesus, who ‘always causes us to triumph’!

Don’t forget to leave your comments below – g’night!

Its time for more Scripture Memory!

This week we’ll memorize the second half of last week’s verse – and, once again, it’s a verse that is better lived out than merely memorized or quoted!

Remember – we can do this!  Otherwise, the Scripture wouldn’t encourage us in this way:

Ephesians 4:32 NLT - Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

Ask the Pastor

A faithful CLCer writes, “We got into a philosophical discussion with some friends the other night and wanted your opinion. The discussion centered around the existence of Heaven and Hell. Knowing that God is a loving and giving God, many questioned how so many horrid, painful, and devastating events happen in our world. The question then became, “Is the world in which we live really “Hell,” and the task set before us, a testing ground to get into Heaven?” Are these trials and tribulations placed in our path to challenge and build our faith? Are there really coincidences in life, or are these events merely parts of the ultimate plan for our lives?”

Excellent question – and one that many people have asked.  Let me try to shed a little light:

  • First of all, on the assumption that your friends were serious & not speaking in hyperbole, NO, I assure you that the world we live in is NOT hell – not by a long shot.  The Bible clearly speaks of hell as a place of everlasting torment, where the fire is not quenched and yet where no one dies (Mark 9:43-48; Luke16:22-24)
  • Secondly, and most assuredly, there is NO “testing ground” to get into Heaven, because there is NOTHING that we can do to ‘earn’ or ‘deserve’ entrance there.  What determines who gets into heaven has nothing to do with our performance; it’s solely based on what Jesus has done for us.  It’s ONLY because of His shed blood that we can enter heaven, and ONLY because we place our whole trust on Him, not on any works of our own.  (I know; I’ve heard all the jokes about Saint Peter at the Pearly Gates offering various ‘tests’ to see if souls can enter heaven – but those are just misguided jokes, with no basis in reality. Scripture could not be clearer on this subject – see 1Corinthians 15:21-22 or Ephesians 2:8-9 or Galatians 2:16)  There is NO salvation except through Jesus Christ! (Acts 4:12)
  • The third question is a bit more difficult, in that many believers will disagree as to the source of “trials & tribulations”Some Christians would see them as God’s way of building our faith, while others would argue that only Satan would send trials & tribulations in our path.  There are Scriptures that seem to support either view.  Personally, my opinion is that there are 3 possible sources of trials for the believer: sometimes God allows; sometimes the devil sends; and sometimes life happens – keep in mind we do live in a fallen world, and some things, in my humble opinion, are just the result of sin that entered the world thru Adam & Eve.  What I can say with assurance is that regardless of the source, it is God’s plan that our trials would strengthen our faith! (see 1Peter 1:6-7 or James 1:2-4)
  • The final question is also debatable, so I will give you my opinion again: while some would argue that everything happens for a reason, I’m not sure that Scripture backs that up.  Again, I’m convinced that some things happen simply because we live in an imperfect, fallen world.  However, for the believer, that’s NOT discouraging, because the truth of Romans 8:28 trumps it all!  It may have originated with the enemy, or it might be an ugly coincidence of our fallen world, but my God promises to make it work together ultimately for my good!  (By the way, the ‘good’ He has in mind is that we would become more like Jesus – see Romans 8:29)  For more on how God can take even the worst of situations and turn it around, look at Genesis 45:3-8 and Genesis 50:14-21.

Whew….heavy stuff.  I hope this helps a bit.

Now, what would YOU like to Ask the Pastor?

Missions at CLC and YOU…

Our annual Missions Emphasis time is just around the corner at CLC, and this year promises to be bigger/better than ever, so I want to give you a heads-up to mark your calendar and make plans:

  • Melva Lea Beacham will get us started (while concluding the “Vintage Jesus” series, too) on October 8-9.  She’ll be speaking at our International Prayer Breakfast on Saturday at 9am (no admission charge – but you can get your ticket at the Welcome Center for any donation), as well as all four weekend services in Tinley Park (Saturday at 5pm; Sunday at 8, 9:30 & 11:30 a.m.).
  • If the technology allows, she’ll also minister for the Sunday services in South Bend and Lisle.  If you heard her teaching about Israel on her first visit to CLC in January of 2010, you don’t want to miss her!
  •  On October 14-16 our special guests will be David & Stephanie Paluskey, whose story of how God is using an electrical engineer and his homemaker wife to impact nations will thrill you!
  • They’ll be sharing at the 3rd Anniversary Banquet on Friday night for All For Him, the missions ministry led by Pastor Jaime Flores, as well as at a very special workshop on Saturday morning (9-11am), where you’ll learn how you can go from the marketplace to missionsusing your skills/experience to make a difference in the nationseven if you aren’t an ordained minister!
  • They’ll also be sharing at our annual International Dinner on Sunday at 6pm.  It’s always a highlight of the year, as we enjoy foods from various cultures, great fellowship with other CLCers, and of course, the unveiling of our 2012 missions trip opportunities.
  • We’ll close out the Missions month on October 23 with special guest, J. Lee Grady.  Lee is an author, award-winning journalist and an ordained minister.  After serving as the editor of Charisma magazine for 11 years, he is now deeply involved in ministry to the Nations.

I can’t wait!

Too much for one weekend…..

Jesus came to our sermon-planning meeting yesterday.

I’m serious.  Kinda like the story in John 20 when the disciples met behind closed doors to talk about Jesus and all of a sudden, He just showed up!

As our pastoral team talked about this week’s message in the “Vintage Jesus” series, and looked through various Scriptures we plan to use, I sensed Jesus in the room!  (Wish I could say that for every week’s staff meeting, but it was definitely true yesterday!)

So I want to say 2 things about that:

  • get to a CLC campus this weekend!  There is NO way we can talk about Jesus and look closely at WHO He is, without expecting that He’s going to show up & do stuff among us!  I’m expecting people to be healed, set free, and changed by their encounter this weekend!
  • come back to this blog all next week (September 26-30) – Better yet, subscribe now (on the right of your screen) so you’ll get each post delivered to your inbox.  Here’s why: there was SO much that we want to say about Jesus that we couldn’t fit it all in, and it’s SO good we couldn’t just leave it out.  So I’m going to post a daily devotion next week, using 5 truths about Jesus that we wanted to include but just didn’t have time.  (I think it will bless you!)

I guess there IS one more thing I want to say: invite, invite, invite.  If you know someone who needs Jesus or who needs a miracle, THIS weekend would be the time to bring them to any campus of CLC, because He will be present!

That’s all.

Stand with Israel

That’s what we’re calling our 2012 CLC trip to the Holy Land, which you’ll hear more about over the next few Sundays. (Get the informational flyer here, or you can complete the registration form here, and you can get a sample letter to help secure sponsors here).  It will not only be the tour of a lifetime, but there’s something about walking where Jesus walked that makes Scripture come alive!

But I’m writing today for an even more important way that ALL of us can stand with Israel – in prayer.  In case you haven’t heard, the Palestinian Authority plans to apply for independent statehood through the United Nations this week, probably this Friday.

While our government leaders are assuring us that they will veto such a request and encourage the Palestinians to return to peace negotiations with Israel instead, this situation is certainly fraught with danger.  Would you join with me in praying that the nations would have a change of heart and stand with Israel, instead of falling into the schemes of radical and fanatical nations in the Middle East who would deny Israel’s right to exist!

I know that most Americans feel we have our hands full with our own problems, especially with the economy and unemployment concerns.  But God’s Word is so clear that we must stand with His chosen people Israel in the last days, or experience world turmoil such as we’ve not known.  Join me in prayer this week, and plan to be a part of the International Day of Prayer for the Peace of Jerusalem on October 2!

Bears Lessons

da Bears were on my mind, even when I was in Israel

I think I made a bad decision in making this a regular blog feature during football season.

I’m not sure what to say about yesterday’s game against the New Orleans Saints – except that they played like “saints”, while we played like “ain’ts”.

Here’s my best shot at some life lessons from the 30-13 disaster at the SuperDome:

1.  Whatever you do, make sure you take care of the quarterback!  The Bears’ dismal failure to do so even had Saints’ fans feeling sorry for Jay Cutler before it was over.  Since everything starts with the QB, when he is running for his life, NOTHING seems to work.  For the believer, the QB in our lives is the Holy Spirit, who leads & guides us (John 16:13; Romans 8:14).  When we get too busy to receive His guidance, or we simply fail to ask for it, we FAIL!

2.  Your ‘role’ is indispensable in the body of Christ!  I’m not football expert, just a fan – but it seems to me that when several key players went down with injuries, even though they may have been considered “role players” instead of superstars, the rest of the day was ugly for the Bears.  Likewise, Scripture is quite clear that even those members of Christ’s body that we may think are insignificant, are truly necessary for the body to function.  No church can succeed without many different people excelling in their area of ministry, and there’s NO such thing as an “unimportant” ministryFind your gift & use it, for the glory of God! (see 1Cor. 12:14-27; Eph. 4:16)

I could probably try to find some more, but I’d rather quit thinking about this game and start trying to prepare myself mentally for next week against the defending Super Bowl champion Packers (sheesh!)

How ’bout it….do any of you see any ‘life lessons’ I’ve overlooked?  Please share your wisdom with us below-

WEEKEND reflections

So glad to say ‘weekend’ instead of ‘Sunday’ again – so glad to again offer a Saturday evening worship experience at CLC!  Right now, I’m pretty bummed over the Bears’ loss to New Orleans, and I’ve already retired to the couch, but here’s my random thoughts on a good weekend around our campuses:

  • For sure, the opening of CLC 1929 rocked!  Music was terrific, energy was off the charts, and Sam Hamstra did a terrific job bringing the Word!  I could not have been more proud of the whole team, and I love the fact that several ‘experienced’ CLCers were on hand to show their support for the next generation!  Opening night attendance was 114!
  • Pastor Herley from our Philippines campus said the “presence of God is just awesome” in their services this weekend, and they had 20 people pray to receive Christ!
  • At our South Bend campus, Pastor Doug reports a “very moving” service there, with lots of tears in response to the truth that we have a ‘touchable, reachable God who cares for us”.  (Sounds like he preached today!)
  • I think Pastor Jaime Flores must have preached, too – he says the Hispanic service was “really good” today, with more new folks responding, and the appeal from him and Scott Pachol resulted in several more CLCers signing up to serve our missions trip to Haifa, Israel right after Thanksgiving-
  • In Tinley Park, I must say that I enjoyed preaching all 3 services – something about talking about Jesus – HE just shows up!  We had at least 7 or 8 people who prayed to enter into a relationship with Jesus today, and that never gets old!
  • Loved the prophetic word that our young adults are going to experience “Jesus culture” with signs & wonders outside the church walls, and I was especially touched in the 11:30 service when Sam Hamstra led the 20-somethings in praying for us “over 40″ folk!  God wants the generations to come together in the last days – read Malachi 4:5-6!
  • Perhaps the service report ‘prize’ for this weekend goes to Pastor Eric at our Lisle campus, where they held a “grocery giveaway” on Saturday for needy folks in their community, which resulted in 3 people giving their lives to Christ on the spot, and several others who visited today’s service from that outreach, which has the Lisle team really fired-up!  Eric also felt this was their best service ever in the pavilion (a few times a year, the hotel ballroom that we rent is in use, and our campus has to move into a tent-like pavilion inside the hotel lobby area, which usually hampers things a bit in terms of audio-visual, etc.)  But today he said there was an intense time of prayer & ministry in the altar!  I’m already loving what the Vintage Jesus series is doing for ALL of our campuses!
  • Kudos also to Pastors Jim & Cheri Garrett, who were at the Lisle campus today and provided some great feedback & advice for our children’s ministry there!

Honestly, if it weren’t for the way the Bears played, this would have been a wonderful weekend! (As it was, I suspect perhaps Jesus wept again!)

One last thing before I sign off: did anyone in Tinley Park notice the new carpet today?  Whaddya think??

Scripture Memory for this week!

Learning Scripture is NOT so we can quote a bunch of verses; it’s to help us get God’s Word into our spirit, where we can walk it out every day.  This week’s verse is certainly intended to be walked out, and it’s kinda long, so we’re going to break it into two parts to help your memorizing.  Here’s the first part for this week:

Ephesians 4:31 NLT  - Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.

Happy memorizing walking it out!

Ask the Pastor

My favorite questioner writes, “My next question is found in Hebrews 10:26-29.  This kind of confuses me because scripture says that we have all sinned and fallen short. Also, 1John 1:9 says that if we repent for our sins He is just and able to forgive us. I thought as long as we had breath left in our body we can ask for forgiveness.  Also, before salvation, most of us did deliberately sin even though we knew that we were in danger of damnation. Once we became born again, we saw how it was only God’s mercy and compassion that gave us a chance or chances to repent.  Is this scripture telling us that sometimes a person may lose his chance of forgiveness even while still alive?”

Great question – again, I say ‘great’ not only because I’m sure others have asked the same question, but also because it’s a question that I can clearly answer from Scripture, instead of giving my opinion only. (That’s also much safer for you, since none of us is infallible, and our opinions aren’t always worth much!)

The simplest and clearest answer is that this passage was written to believers, not to the world in general – so it certainly doesn’t apply at all to anything that you did prior to coming to faith in Christ.  In addition, the wording in verse 26 (especially in the original Greek writing) clearly does not refer to an act of sin, but to the continual practice of sin.  So the writer charges us that, after coming to faith in Christ, we go right on practicing sin as a lifestyle, giving no regard for what Jesus did for us, how the Gospel set us free, what the Holy Spirit is doing in our lives, or how God’s grace to us is so amazing – if we ignore or “despise” (disregard) all of that, then there is no more sacrifice for our sins.

In other words, if we disregard all that God has done for us (with full knowledge), then He has no other plan to save us.  He’s not going to send another Savior; God has no “plan B” – so if we reject all that He’s already done to save us, then we forsake our own mercy, and the only thing we have to look forward to is judgment.

This passage should NOT cause any believer to worry or fear the coming judgment – unless we are deliberately rejecting all that God has done for us in order to eagerly pursue a sinful lifestyle.  The answer to your last question is “NO”, we don’t lose our chance of forgiveness while still alive (except for that lone exception of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which essentially is for a Spirit-filled believer to renounce his experience and declare that it’s of the devil).

I hope this helped.  Now, what would YOU like to Ask the Pastor?

You heard it here first…..

After our sermon-planning meeting yesterday, we totally revamped our plans for this new sermon series, and I’m telling you: “Vintage Jesus” is going to be the bomb!  I don’t want to give away too many secrets just yet, but let me tell you this:

  • this series is TAILOR-MADE for you to invite your friends!  Anyone, whether they grew up in a churchy-religious family or they never stepped foot in a church, will be able to connect with this series!
  • this series is all about getting to know the real Jesus – NOT who we may have imagined Him to be, but who He really is!
  • this series is about the timeless, classic Jesus – not any other term you might associate with vintage – He’s certainly NOT outdated; He’s the same yesterday, today and forever! (Heb. 13:8)
  • this series is going to help all of us get to know Jesus better!
  • this series is going to use some creative elements beyond anything we’ve ever done before!

Can you tell I’m excited?

Whatever you have to do, don’t miss this weekend – Saturday at 5pm or Sunday at 8, 9:30 or 11:30am in Tinley Park as well as 10:30am in Lisle and South Bend!

We value compassion…..because love acts!

Our LEGACY series may have ended on Sunday, but I’m SO pleased to report that you are living our values!  As you probably recall from this post, one of our community partners, Together We Cope, let us know last week that they have been serving so many needy families of late that their cupboards were bare!

We tried to get the word out via email & this blog, and I just learned that 35 big bags of groceries were delivered from CLC, PLUS you gave almost $2,000 last Sunday so that TWC can purchase groceries from the Chicago Food Depository at pennies on the dollar – so your giving will feed a LOT of needy families in the next days and weeks.

THANK YOU for being a generous, compassionate people!  I love this church!

Bears Lessons

3 of my favorite Bears fans saying "Bears are #1"

Ahhh, football season!  I’ve had withdrawal’s since January, so it was extra-good to get to watch the game this afternoon.  (Can we all take a moment to thank God for DVR’s?)

So, by popular demand, I’m returning to my Monday feature of ‘Bears Lessons’ based on my amateur observations. Here’s what I saw in the Bears-Falcons game:

1.  The joy of the Lord is your strength! (Neh. 8:10) Seriously.  Was it just me, or did you notice every time the camera focused on the sidelines, the Falcons players looked like they couldn’t wait to get back to Atlanta, while the Bears were smiling, laughing, teasing each other and generally just having FUN?  (Before you comment, let me admit that it probably had to do with the score as the Bears were already comfortably ahead – but as a principle, there’s no question that when we ENJOY our work, we do a much better job!)

2. Desire is a powerful motivator! (Matt. 5:6) I know it’s a worn-out cliche’, but it honestly seemed like the Bears just wanted this one more than the Falcons.  From top to bottom, sideline to sideline, in all 3 phases of the game, this team seemed motivated to go all-out!  (Does Julius Peppers’ motor ever slow down?) It’s really the same with us – when we truly hunger for something, we’re more likely to receive!

3.  When opportunity presents itself, you must act! (Ecc. 9:11) Again, I couldn’t help but notice that the Falcons had several opportunities to make plays, grab picks & more – but it was the Bears who always seemed to be in the right place at the right time, forcing & recovering fumbles, etc.  Someone smarter than me has said that “opportunity only knocks once”, but I think the quote from Roy Chapin, Jr. is even more helpful: “Be ready when opportunity comes…Luck is the time when preparation and opportunity meet.” I know it’s important that we be prepared for the opportunities that God brings into our lives every day.

I’m sure there were a LOT more life-lessons from the first game of this 2011 season, so would you mind sharing more below?

Sunday Reflections

9/11.  It’s a date that seems to stand by itself.  A day that changed the world as we knew it.  Special thanks to all the CLCers who serve as firemen, police officers, or EMT’s, to protect us every day of the year – putting your own life on the line for us.  We honor you today.

Other than the sobering thoughts that accompany the 10th anniversary of 9/11, I thought it was a GOOD day at CLC, around the campuses:

  • Actually my first report came from last night’s special event sponsored by CLC-1929.  Sam reported to me that they had a capacity crowd, and that lots of people asked about CLC and lots more promised to attend 1929 this Saturday!  He also said the ministry that partnered with us told him that CLC was the most hospitable church they’ve ever worked with! Excited about the unity/momentum for 1929 going into their launch THIS Saturday at 5pm!
  • Next was from Pastor Jaime Flores at our Hispanic campus, where we’ve had a real breakthrough recently….Jaime is excited about 5 new visitors today & says he’s expecting more next week-
  • In Tinley Park, I thought it was a good day, especially for the opening day of Bears season! (Couldn’t help but notice the attendance shift to the 9:30 service so folk could get home in time for kickoff!)
  • LOVED the worship time today, especially at 9:30 – there’s just nothing like the Presence of God!
  • Appreciated all the lobby comments about the Legacy series – I don’t think we can talk about our values too much!  (Must also admit I enjoyed preaching today – what a privilege to preach to you folk)
  • Love the fact that Jesus set the example for us in how to value people: without regard to race, gender, social status, or sin! (if you weren’t here, see John 4:6-18)
  • Especially love the fact that someone sowed a seed in the woman’s heartmakes me determined to keep sowing, even while I’m believing for a harvest!
  • AND I’m thankful for the ongoing harvest at CLC, with another water baptism today & at least 3 people who prayed to receive Christ!
  • But for sure the BEST report today comes from our Lisle campus, who celebrated their first birthday on 9/11! Pastor Eric said it was “magical, inspirational, soulful & joyful”. They honored the local Fire Department (the Chief came with 5 of his men) and 2 principal’s of local schools with a plaque to recognize their leadership to the community.  In addition, CLC-Lisle provided school shoes for needy families from the 2 schools and funds for winter clothes.  The principals and Fire Department were so moved, saying they had never experienced ANYTHING like this – to feel this kind of love from a group for no other reason than to show love!  They closed the celebration with a special birthday party & lunch together – and had the 3rd highest attendance in their one-year history!  LOVE IT!
  • Haven’t yet heard from Pastor Doug at our South Bend campus or Pastor Herley in Davao City, Philippines, so if you’re reading this from either campus, please give us your thoughts about today at your location in the “comments” below-

Topping all that off with a convincing Bears win made this just about a perfect Sunday, but as usual, after 3 services, I’m tired, so I’m retiring to the couch now……

Scripture Memory

This week’s memory verse is a familiar one; in fact, it was one of the first verses I ever memorized after I came to Christ over 45 years ago.  But it’s still just as valid for us now as it was then. I hope you’ll enjoy hiding this one in your heart:

Romans 12:1 NLTAnd so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him

Ask the Pastor

This week’s question is, “In Genesis 4:1, does scripture specifically say that Cain was Adam and Eve’s first child and Able was their second child?  I know they had more children because Cain must have taken one of his sisters to be his wife.”

Interesting question; one I’ve never been asked before.  I went to several translations and commentaries, including the Amplified Bible, which offers the strongest indication by saying “next” in regards to Abel’s birth.  However, the rather obvious answer is that the Bible does NOT specifically say that Cain was their first child. I suppose one could argue that they could have had a daughter first – although Eve’s exclamation about Cain’s birth certainly seems to me like a strong indicator that he was her firstborn.

I did discover one thing in my research that I didn’t know: some scholars believe that Cain and Abel were twins, and that children in those early days of man’s history were usually born in pairs. It’s an interesting idea to say the least, and one that I can’t refute with Scripture.

And I do agree with my questioner that Cain must have married his own sister – I just can’t see any other possibility in the Biblical record.

Hope that helped a bit.  Now, what would YOU like to Ask the Pastor?

More & more connections = more & more blessings!

I’m still in the Gulf Coast for the ARC vets meeting this morning before catching a flight back to O’Hare this afternoon, but I received an email report that’s too good not to share:

over HALF of our CLC-TP attendees have signed-up to be part of a Life Group this Fall semester!

Now I’ll admit that I know churches whose percentage far exceeds ours, and probably the most common ‘goal’ I’ve heard from other pastors is 80% participation.  But this is the first time in our history that we’ve ever managed to get above 40%, so I’m rejoicing at our progress!

Kudos to LG Directors Ken & Pat Earley and their entire team for the great job of organizing & motivating folks in the lobby these past 3 Sundays!

But please hear my heart: the real reason I’m excited is NOT because our Directors ‘done good’, or because a CLC program had numerical success.  (Trust me, I’ve gotten over that long ago).  The reason I’m excited is because I know what’s going to happen in the lives of those almost 600 folk who participate in a group this Fall. After all:

  • We all need people who really know us (not just the Sunday handshake)
  • We all need people who will protect us, by praying for our weaknesses instead of gossiping about us.
  • We all need people who will be honest with us, when we have blind spots.  (And we ALL have blind spots)
  • We all need people who will help us grow into our potential, by encouraging us.

ALL of that happens in a healthy Life Group.  Plus we make friends for life!

That’s why I’m excited about record numbers of CLCers involved. And it’s NOT too late for YOU – the sign-ups ended Sunday, but the FUN is just beginning – if you want to get connected, let us know here.

Going in different directions (again)

One week ago I told you in this post that my wife & I were both headed out of town in different directions.  Today, I’m saying it again, except this time she’s scheduled to arrive back at O’Hare this afternoon from her trip to South Africa, while I’m leaving this morning for the Gulf Coast.

I miss her terribly when she’s not around (it’s not good for man to be alone!) and I especially hate it that I won’t even be here to greet her after an 8-day missions trip.  I don’t think this has ever happened to us before, but it couldn’t be helped this time.

I’m meeting several other veteran (is that a euphemism for ‘old’?) pastors from the Association of Related Churches as we launch a new effort to help coach & mentor the young couples who are planting churches with ARC (in just 10 years, ARC has planted about 200 churches in 36 states!). At this stage of life, my heart is totally into helping younger men find success in ministry, so this feels like a great fit, and I’m excited about getting connected with the other ARC vets tonight and tomorrow morning.

But I must admit I’m already looking forward to my return tomorrow evening to kiss my wife!

Food drive!

Last Sunday my son Brent got our attention and our CLC 1929 Director, Sam Hamstra clobbered us (nicely) with the realization that “God-talk without God-acts is outrageous nonsense” (James 2:17).

Today I learned that one of our community partners, Together We Cope, has exhausted their food pantry, as they now serve as many as 90 families a day in this economy.

Shall we just say, “be warmed & filled” or shall we respond like the Good Samaritan?

Sometimes throwing money at a problem is the most convenient thing to do.  But I’m calling on CLCers to instead help us with a food drive to help these needy families from around the south suburbs.  You can take the food staples directly to Together We Cope (170th & Oak Park Ave.) or you can drop them at CLC-Tinley Park this week OR even bring them with you on Sunday.  Nancy Harris has agreed to be our point person for this Food Drive, and you can reach her via email or by calling the church at 708.429.7729 if you have questions.

Here’s a list of suggested items the pantry needs:

Peanut butter          Jelly                   Rice (1-pound sizes)             Pasta           Noodles            Beans               Cereal
Canned meats         Tuna fish          Canned soups                        Ramen soups              Canned fruits         Canned vegetables          Spaghetti sauce

Let’s put some God-acts alongside our God-talk!

Prayer among friends…

In the last 3 days I’ve heard from 3 different friends in different parts of the world who each mentioned that they were praying for me.  I’m not talking about the many CLCers who assured me of their prayers in the recent loss of my oldest brother in Arkansas – I’m talking about friends who just felt prompted to pray.  One of them was even awakened before dawn to pray for me, and give me some Scripture that was given to her for me. I am blessed to have such friends.

Do you have friends like that in your life?

I so want that for you.  It’s part of the reason that I want every CLCer to experience the benefits of being part of a small group of like-minded believers, who will support you in prayer, perhaps when you don’t even ask.

Know what else came to my mind this morning as I reflected on those friends and their prayers for me?

I want to be that kind of friend.

Selah.

Sunday reflections

Quite a holiday weekend at CLC…..here’s my quick recap, in no particular order:

  • I was blown away by attendance at the Tinley Park campus today, as we had right at 1,300 people here on a holiday weekend!  (I think that’s 6 of the past 9 Sunday’s that we’ve been around or above 1,300 in attendance, whereas we normally are under 1,200 in the summertime.  I think we’re adding a 4th weekend service right on time!)
  • Speaking of that 4th weekend service, I would LOVE for some of our 9:30 or 11:30 a.m. CLCers to choose to attend our new CLC-1929 service starting on September 17 at 5pm – it will (a) free up seats in those 2 ‘prime-inviting’ times; (b) freeing up those chairs will enable us to keep growing in those services; and (c) it will be a great encouragement to our Young Adult team, and they definitely need the stability that comes with faithful, experienced believers!  To volunteer, or to get more info, please contact our 1929 Director, Sam Hamstra.
  • As their pastor, I was “proud” (in a godly sense of the word) of Brent and Sam today – I thought they both knocked it out of the park in communicating clearly that ‘We Value Compassion’.  I loved both of their stories that made the message come alive AND helped us all connect & relate!
  • SO grateful for the response to the message: I heard that over a dozen new CLCers volunteered to serve as mentors through KidsHopeUSA (meaning we’ll have over 30 mentors in one elementary school in Country Club Hills!) AND I know that many others were moved to serve homeless vets with CLCer Andy Nash’s life group!  The proof of compassion is LOVE ACTS!
  • Loving the momentum of new people coming to Christ – with 3 more baptisms today & about 7-8 who prayed to receive Christ today – it just never gets old, so KEEP INVITING, CLC!
  • Perhaps the most wonderful report today came from our Hispanic Pastor, Jaime Flores.  He said their service was good today, but he had actually accepted an invitation to preach for a non-charismatic church in Blue Island, and since the pastor there is so open, Jaime preached about the Holy Spirit and about 30 people came forward and were on the floor, broken before God, as the Spirit moved among them!  (I think that’s a-w-e-s-o-m-e!)
  • Pastor Eric from the Lisle campus reported that their attendance was off due to the holiday, but that the Compassion message really hit the target, and they had a great response to opportunities to serve their community, including a drive to provide shoes for needy children at one of their local elementary schools.  Also much excitement about their 1-year birthday party and 9/11 community outreach next Sunday!  (Speaking of Lisle outreach, after Brent’s stories from Thriftique today, we had several CLC-TP folk who want to donate to the store and even volunteer to serve there.  If you’re interested in helping in any way, please contact Pastor Eric directly)
  • Our Philippines campus continues to thrive, as Pastor Herley reports a wonderful presence of God in their services this weekend, and another 20 new people gave their lives to Christ!
  • Speaking of international news, we had several Indonesians worship with us at the 11:30 service today, and they’re looking to launch a new church here in the south suburbs – hoping to find ways to partner with them.  AND my wife & daughter just completed a Women’s Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa this weekend – can’t wait to get them back home!
  • Haven’t yet heard from Pastor Doug in South Bend, so if any of our SB CLCers are reading this, please leave your comments about your service below:

Enjoy a relaxing holiday with family & friends tomorrow!

Scripture Memory Time

Our memory verse for this week is one I’ve taught in recent weeks, and I heard Pastor Chris Hodges teach it in the same way (love to be on the same page with great men of God!) this week during my trip to Oklahoma City:

James 5:16 NLTConfess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

I pray you’ll not only learn those words, but that you’ll put them into practice when some godly friends who will bring out the best in you by providing a safe place for you to confess, and by offering great prayer on your behalf!  Happy memorizing!!

Ask the Pastor

Today’s question comes all the way from the Philippines. One of our missionary friends there writes, “Why is church attendance in America and Canada going down and what can a local church do, scripturally, to turn that trend around?”

Wow….such a big & important question.  I’m tempted to say, “I don’t know, but when you find out, please tell me!”, but that would be shirking my responsibility to the faithful readers of this blog.  So I’ll venture out where angels fear to trod, and give my honest opinions on this important subject.  Keep in mind that I’m no church-growth expert; I’m just a pastor who loves the local church!

First, the WHY question: why is church attendance going down in America & Canada? (By the way, it IS, and according to George Barna’s research, American’s who attend church on an average week are now in the minority!) I’m sure there are many different reasons, including:

  • the fact that most Americans do not find The Church relevant to their daily lives. (I dealt with that in the recent message, “We Value Relevance”)
  • the pace of life today. I recently read that most American’s have a daily one-hour commute to work, one-way, which means adding an additional two hours onto the normal work day.  Many folks feel they just don’t have time for church in their schedule.
  • the magnitude of ‘entertainment’ options. Years ago, people went to Church because it was an opportunity to socialize with friends & hear good (?) music and Bible teaching.  Today, we are inundated with entertainment choices at our fingertips, without leaving the comfort of our home – not to mention that we can watch great Christian music & preaching 24/7 on our TV sets!
  • fulfillment of Bible prophecy.(I figure you expect this from a pastor, but it’s true!) Scripture warns us of a time when “the love of many will grow cold”(Matthew 24:12), while in reality, we need to be gathering together with even more consistency as we near the coming of the Lord. (Hebrews 10:25)

I’m sure that’s not an exhaustive list, but it’s a start.  Now let’s look at the “WHAT can we do about it” question:

  • Keep church services relevant! We may not have the funds to compete with Hollywood or local entertainment options, but there is NO EXCUSE to ever make the Bible appear boring!  As I pointed out in the message mentioned above (“We Value Relevance”), this book is more up-do-date than tomorrow’s news!  God’s Word gives us practical wisdom for dealing with everyday life: marriage, finances, relationships, work, raising children, etc. – so there’s NO reason we can’t make our weekend services speak to where people live!  It’s time The Church addressed the questions people are asking about sex, pornography, abortion, homosexuality, and more – because Scripture doesn’t shy away from any of those topics!
  • Bring God’s Presence as priority #1! When the Holy Spirit shows up in our services, anything can happen, and lives are changed! if our people know that they can find answers to their needs and that the supernatural, miracle-working Presence of God will be present in our services, I think they’ll show up – and bring others with them!
  • Take care of the stuff that we can take care of! Probably every pastor wishes he had a new, state-of-the-art facility in which to hold services.  Almost none of us will have that privilege.  But there’s no reason we can’t present what we do have as well as possible.  The building can be clean and neat.  It can smell nice.  It can have proper signage, so our guests know how to navigate the halls.  It doesn’t cost much to paint a wall, to keep things looking fresh.  Shame on us if the building that houses our Gospel message is neglected, unkempt and smelly!
  • Strive for excellence in all that we do! We may not have Hollywood’s stars, but we can use gifted people, and we can rehearse regularly and hone our skills and use our abilities for the glory of God – rather than just allowing ‘anything is good enough’ for Church!  (Read Malachi 1:6-14 to see how God feels about that)
  • PRAY, pray, pray! Pray to the Lord of the Harvest, to draw people to His house.  And pray for the real problem (which isn’t a lack of prospects, but a lack of workers! – Matthew 9:37-38)

By the way, there are numerous churches bucking those trends, all around the country.  For instance, Hillsong of NYC has reached 3,000 in attendance after just 7 months of existence! Newspring Church led by Pastor Perry Noble broke all attendance records a few weeks ago during the summer! Elevation Church led by Steven Furtick is experiencing unbelievable growth in just 6 years!  Even here at CLC, we had the highest summer attendances in our 21-year history, and we’re seeing new families joining us each week – because we refuse to give in to the trend!

What would YOU add to either list – reasons why people aren’t attending or actions churches can take to reverse this?

Now, what would YOU like to Ask the Pastor?

Roundtable, Day 2

What a day. Just got home from Oklahoma City and the EQUIP Roundtable.

I had thought I’d enjoy the talks from John Maxwell, Craig Groeschel & Kevin Myers, since all of them are ministry heroes and larger-than-life figures to me.  Figured it was a nice time to kick back from normal duties, enjoy great fellowship, try to help the young pastors I was with, and just, well, relax and enjoy.

Wrong.

John Maxwell began the morning by giving us the KEY to any meeting like this – his “A-C-T” system of taking notes.  He explained that whenever he’s exposed to a learning opportunity like this, as he takes notes, he marks them according to his plan of implementation.  An “A” means, “when I get home, I’m going to apply this”.  A “C” means, “when I get home, I’m going to change something I’m doing because of this”.  A “T” means, “when I get home, I’ve got to transfer this learning to my team/staff.

So much for my plans to relax and enjoy.  Instead, I was thinking hard all day, and I’ve got several more days to ponder the myriad of insights I gained from these incredible leaders.  Normally, I consider a conference worthwhile if I get one good idea that we can use at CLC.  Today I came home with 8 pages of scribbled notes and 23 “ACT’s”.

In case you can’t tell, I loved every minute of it.

Here’s a couple of pics with two of my all-time heroes:

John Maxwell - his leadership teaching changed my life/ministry

Chris Hodges - God used him to help me get past my worst relational wound

Roundtable, day 1

Last night we had several hours of meetings at the Equip Roundtable hosted by LifeChurch.tv – and it has already been well worth the trip!

We first sat in on an optional live taping at LifeChurch for 2 upcoming messages: the first by Pastor Chris Hodges and the second by John Maxwell, and I’ve gotta say it: Chris Hodges’ teaching about being connected in a Life Group was hands-down the BEST teaching on the importance of belonging to a small group that I’ve EVER heard! (I told him afterwards that I will be stealing it for CLC!) Then John did a masterful job of teaching ‘how a miracle happens’, in his own inimitable style.

Then we enjoyed a steak dinner with a small gathering of only about 45 pastors & leaders who’ve gathered for this Roundtable, and the fellowship was every bit as enjoyable as the food.  These young pastors are peppering me with questions, and I’m loving every minute of it.  (Besides the fact that they’re all keeping me in stitches with their antics, so I think I’ve laughed more already than I had in months!)

Can’t wait for what’s going to happen today, as we hear from 3 or 4 of the top pastoral leaders in America, with plenty of time for Q & A and discussion as well.  Events like this make me realize all over again what an incredible privilege I have to be serving in the Kingdom, and how blessed I am to be in the company of the people that God has allowed me to rub shoulders with!

I pray everyone reading this will experience some genuine God-moments in your walk, just as I anticipate more today myself!

Lunch with a friend

Nothing like catching up with a friend, is there?

I got into Oklahoma City about noon today & was able to meet up with Scott Williams.  We’ve only been connected for a year or so, but Scott has proven to be a true friend (he even bought lunch today!)

Seriously, talking with him is like drinking from a fire hose – the man is FULL of great Kingdom ideas, and I’m going to implement some of ‘em for sure in the weeks ahead.

Looking forward to connecting with the 3 young pastors here soon, and gleaning from the wisdom of John Maxwell & Craig Groeschel – but I don’t know if anything is better than being with a real friend?

How ’bout you?  WHO are you connecting with?

Off in different directions….

Chris and I generally use a ‘divide-and-conquer’ strategy at CLC.  In other words, she stays focused on some areas of ministry, while I tend to others.  (Sometimes people are quite surprised when they ask for an appointment with us both, and I tell them ‘no’ – but we’ve found we can get a lot more done this way.)

But I think today we’re taking that philosophy to new extremes, as we both head to O’Hare at different times to go in totally different directions:

  • I’m headed to Oklahoma City this morning for about 30 hours, where I’m meeting three talented young pastors who each came from my old denominational background and are now planting non-denominational churches in San Antonio, Seattle and Springfield.  It’s an opportunity for me to practice what I’ve preached lately, namely, to coach and mentor and pour myself into these younger guys some of the stuff that I’ve learned along the way.  And while we’re there, we’re meeting with John Maxwell, Craig Groeschel and Kevin Myers, who will no doubt pour into all of us!  And we’ll be meeting at LifeChurch.tv, one of the largest and most innovative churches in America!  (Can you tell I’m excited?)
  • This afternoon Chris & Jen will board the first flight that will eventually get them to Johannesburg, South Africa, where they’ll lead a H2H Women’s Conference for Pastor Ernest Umanah, and spend several days in ministry there.  Some of you will remember Pastor Ernest from his visit to CLC last January.  He has asked CLC to ‘adopt’ his work as one of our campuses, and this visit with my wife and daughter is the next step of prayerfully processing that decision. (I hope you’ll pray, not only for the success of the Women’s Conference, but for clarity & direction as we move forward there)

Thanks for your prayers for safe travels and anointed meetings!

Sermon-planning

Tuesday is the day all our pastors & other leaders gather for sermon-planning, and today was a doozie (did that word just date me?).

I know you get tired of hearing this, but I’m REALLY pumped about this Sunday’s message and a VERY special presentation we’ve got planned.  I’m not gonna give away our secrets, but let me tell you it’ll be different than anything we’ve ever done before.  Of course, as the first Sunday in September, it’s also the day we highlight missions and receive communion together, and that’s always special.

It may be a holiday weekend, but I think you’ll be GLAD you went to church this Sunday!  (Would you invite someone to join you?)

See you here!

No Word, No Food!

In yesterday’s message I mentioned that over 100 of our youth & their leaders have formed a new ‘club’ (actually, it’s a Facebook group) called, “No Word, No Food!”.  The idea came from a message preached by Pastor Joel Montes at our CHARGED Youth Camp a few weeks ago, in which he challenged our students to spend time with the Lord every day.  To reinforce their devotional habit, he suggested they not eat food until they first ‘ate’ God’s Word, ala Matthew 4:4 and Job 23:12!

Someone smarter than me has said, “In the beginning, we make habits.  In the end, habits make us!”

To that I say, “I like eeeeet!” (in my best Bishop Tudor Bismark voice)

I do like it.  In fact, I love the fact that our students have adopted this as their habit (so proud of them & our Consumed Student Ministries), and I’m urging everyone reading this post to follow their example.  If you want to join the Facebook Group (where they post Scriptures from their devotions each day, to encourage each othere), you can do so here.

If you want some help with your daily devotions, the internet is FULL of ideas.  Here’s one I noticed this morning, and while I can’t endorse everything on the site since I don’t even know these folk, anything that will get you into the Word everyday is a good thing!

Will YOU accept the challenge?

Say it with me: “No Word, no food!”

Sunday reflections

More good reports around the horn at CLC today – I’m loving the momentum we’ve gained this summer as we head into our Fall season of ministry:

  • Pastor Jaime Flores actually was the first report this weekend, as our Hispanic campus sponsored a special worship service on Friday night, and the attendance was about double a normal Sunday!  He said, “we prayed for our nation, the government, our armed forces, our cities, and for revival in the Hispanic churches in the south suburbs, as well as for the economy and our families and the salvation of their children.  We asked all the congregation to fast in preparation for this service, and let me tell you, God showed up!(Several people were baptized in the Holy Spirit that night as well!)
  • Pastor Herley’s email from our Davao, Philippines campus expressed gratitude that the Firstborn band is back home! He said they even led some new songs they had learned here, and that there was a special anointing in their services, with 740 in attendance today and 17 who prayed to receive Christ!
  • At our South Bend campus, Pastor Doug reports a great move of the Spirit in their service, with several people coming forward to be baptized in the Holy Spirit and at least 2 of them receiving today!
  • Pastor Eric weighed in from our Lisle campus where we continue to experience multimedia challenges – but they pressed through for a great time of worship in spite of not being able to use the screens again today.  My wife laid some good groundwork by sowing seeds about the Presence of God working in our lives, and they ended the day with an encouraging Next Steps class with 20 new summertime recruits!  Eric said, “Still can’t believe what God is doing in the summer here!”
  • Now for Tinley Park…where to start?  First, the good news: we estimate over a dozen people were baptized in the Holy Spirit in the 3 services, as we invited people forward to receive their prayer language! The bad news: I had enough material today to do a 3-week series about how we can value His Presence!  (As it was, I went 45-50 minutes, & still didn’t cover a ton of what I’d planned)
  • I love my church!  (I don’t use “my” in the sense that it belongs to me; I mean I love belonging to this church) – I think I had a conversation after each service about the “Be here, on timepoint of the message, and each person I spoke with not only admitted their ‘guilt’, but thanked me for getting their attention & promised to change!
  • Most important: in the Presence of the Lord, anything can happen — and does!  We saw at least 5-6 people pray to receive Christ today, and that NEVER gets old!

As we officially close out Summer and prepare for our Fall season of ministry, I’ve never been this excited about momentum, as today was at least the 4th or 5th time in the last 2 months that our Tinley campus had more than 1,300 people in attendance! (That’s almost 200 over a ‘normal’ summer Sunday).  I’d say we’re adding this 4th weekend service (CLC 1929 on Saturday’s at 5pm) just in time, and I won’t be surprised if we have to go to 5 weekend services by early 2012!  Remember: you are the “13th man” in someone’s life!  Let’s invite our friends, family & co-workers as never before, and see what God does!

Oh yeah….how did you like the new chairs today?  Were they more comfortable? Love to hear your thoughts about the services at any campus this weekend – just comment below-

Scripture Memory

Last week we learned that we need to be persistent with our prayer and this week we get to see why.

Matthew 7: 8 NLTFor everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.

God’s promises to us are amazing!  Don’t give up!  Keep on asking. Keep on seeking. Keep on knocking.  Because when you do, you will receive.  You will find.  The door will be opened.  So let me ask you one more time,

What are you asking for this week?

Ask the Pastor

A reader writes,“Pastor, I have been trying to figure the answer to this question out so many times, but I just can’t seem to do so.  I’ve read it over and over but I still can’t seem to understand why God sought to kill Moses in Exodus 4:24.  What did Moses do to make God so angry that He wanted to kill him?  Am I missing something?”

Great question (great because it gives me a chance to talk about something I enjoy talking about!)

Perhaps the only thing you’re missing is the context, which is almost always a very important key to understanding Scripture.  In other words, verse 24 by itself doesn’t explain why God wanted to kill Moses, only that He sought to do so.  But by reading the next two verses, especially in the Amplified Bible, it become much clearer.

The reason God was so upset with Moses was that he had failed to keep the covenant God made with Israel, by circumcising his firstborn son.  (By the way, circumcision is NOT the subject I enjoy talking about, since it involves pain in a delicate place!) So even though Moses was God’s chosen man to lead Israel out of bondage, God cannot and will not overlook his own disobedience or negligence!  (According to the Amplified, the reason Moses failed to circumcise his son was because his wife, who was not from a Hebrew heritage, was opposed to the practice.) But verse 24 basically is telling us all: No Excuses!

The part I like to talk about is the New Testament counterpart of circumcision, which is water baptism (see Col 2:11-12, again in the Amplified). I know some will disagree with me, since in the USA it seems that most Christians have tried to back away from a ‘works mentality’ so much in order to embrace “salvation by grace alone, thru faith alone, in Christ alone”, that, in my humble opinion, they have often neglected a very important act of obedience to God’s Word, namely, water baptism by immersion in the name of the Lord!

Before anyone writes me a critical email, I assure you that I do not believe that baptism in and of itself saves us.  I do believe Ephesians 2:8-9 and Rom. 10:9-10 with all my heart.  But I also believe Mark 16:15-16 and Acts 2:38 and Acts 8:12-16 and Acts 10:46-48!  The New Testament record is quite clear that the NORM in the first-century church whenever people turned to the Lord was for them to demonstrate their faith by being immersed in water in obedience to God’s command, and to be filled with the Holy Spirit!  (How we have drifted so far from that practice to where many Christians today have never been water-baptized is a mystery to me!)

Now that we recognize the symbol (circumcision of OT = baptism of NT), the Exodus 4:24 passage takes on new significance.  If God sought to kill you because you failed to do something, would you decide it was pretty serious?

I’ll climb down off my soapbox now, but not before asking: have YOU been baptized by immersion since coming to faith in Christ?

If not, I urge you to find a Bible-believing church this weekend, and ask them to baptize you in obedience to Christ.

(One of the pastors I’ve admired from afar, Steven Furtick from Elevation Church in Charlotte, NC, has baptized 2,158 people in recent weeks – take a look here, and celebrate!)

Hope that helps.  Now, what would YOU like to Ask the Pastor?

Miracle stories…

Yesterday was a busy day at the office, filled with sermon prep, phone calls, meetings and all the usual random stuff that happens in a typical work day.  EXCEPT for the lady who stopped by, unannounced and without an appointment, asking to speak with me.  Our efficient staff wasn’t even sure if they should send her to my office, since she had no appointment.  But I decided to give her a few minutes of my time, and boy, am I glad I did.

She quickly began to share her story – a story that included several major health issues and an unbelievable string of losses – including her job, her home, her marriage, tragic death of a close friend, bankruptcy and more – all within the past 3 or 4 years.  The result was that she was so severely depressed that she could hardly function and had no will to live.

But then a friend invited her to our Empower Conference, and she attended on the last night.  When Pastor Bob Yandian invited people forward for healing, she wanted to come, but was too shy to do so.  But after he prayed for everyone, he said, “you may not have received an instant healing, but you may receive your healing on the way home tonight, or a couple of days from now.  Just receive!”

Two days later she noticed that all her depression had lifted, and she felt normal again.  In fact, she told me that she had struggled with depression for most of her life (although never the deep depression that had settled on her recently) – but that it had been two weeks now since the Conference, and she had never felt JOY like this in her entire life!  Then she said, and “today, I just thought I should stop by and let you know”.

Just had to share that with you-

But I’m also wondering – what other ‘miracle’ stories are out there that we haven’t heard about?

If God has done something wonderful in your life recently, whether at Empower, or at Charged (our youth camp) or through some other ministry at CLC, would you take a moment to tell us your miracle story below?  Let’s encourage each other in the Lord today!

Help is here!

Somehow I completely forgot to mention this in our two largest-attended services this past Sunday, so I thought I’d pass the word along thru my blog today.  Actually, a picture is worth a thousand words, they say – so for all the CLCers who have ever had difficulty with the volume of our music in the services (trust me, it’s almost impossible to get the level to where it pleases everybody) – help is here:

Conveniently located just outside the center doors of the auditorium, these self-dispensing ear plugs are the perfect solution.  Can’t remember which church told us about this, but it sure seems like a great idea.  As Pastor Steve Wasmundt used to say, “Just trying to be a blessing!”

Farewell to the “Firstborn” band

I’m headed to O’Hare this morning with the “Firstborn” band from our Davao City, Philippines campus for their return flight home.  I’m sure Pastor Herley and their family & friends in Davao will be happy to have them back home, but we’re going to miss them at CLC!

During their visit here, they led worship at each CLC campus, and they sang at each service during the Empower Conference.  Most importantly, they led worship & Pastor Joel Montes preached at “CHARGE”, our 2011 Youth Camp – and our students fell in love with them!

And why not? These young men are so in love with Jesus and His people, what is there not to love?  One quick story to illustrate: on the first day they arrived, when they had been traveling for over 24 hours, we didn’t take them home to rest because we wanted to help them get acclimated to the time change and get over jet-lag sooner.  So we brought them to CLC and instead of just sitting around the offices, they went to work assembling some furniture for the building makeover.  We all felt bad about having them work like that, so my daughter apologized to them – and they immediately said, “what are you talking about – this is our church, too!” That’s the kind of heart these guys have, and I love it!

I’m especially thrilled about Pastor Joel Montes’ preaching at Camp, as he impressed upon our students the need to spend time with the Lord in daily devotions.  in fact, he charged them with a new slogan, which simply says, “No Word, no food” - meaning they shouldn’t eat breakfast until they have first spent time reading their Bible!  And it’s working! Our students are on-fire, and because they’re ‘refueling’ every day, I believe it will continue into this school year, for as long as they continue to spend time with the Lord!

We can’t pay for those results.  You’ve heard the testimonies yesterday from our youth about the impact of Camp.  But I do want to say, “THANKS”, to each of them: Pastor Joel Montes, keyboardist Brian Montes, drummer Nathan Montes, guitarist Erik Lumagsao and bass guitarist Japhet Dayaras – we were BLESSED to have you here, and we look forward to seeing you again in Davao!

(Special thanks also to CLCers Davis & Marisa Ferreria, who hosted the band at their home, which saved CLC hundreds of dollars in hotel & food expense, and to CLCers Fernali & Lilibeth Serrano, who stepped in to host them this past weekend while the Ferreria’s were out of town!)

Sunday reflections

  • Another loooong but fun day at CLC.  I love Sundays, and I love my church!  Here’s what happened around our campuses today, in no particular order of importance:
  • First up, Pastor Herley at our Philippines campus reported that a big festival with parades & other downtown festivities hindered their attendance today, as all access roads were blocked (their church meets in downtown Davao City).  However, 15 people still prayed to receive Christ in their 2 Sunday services!  AND, this week two of their ‘networks’ (these are potentially new campuses in Davao City, where some of the young ministers are regularly teaching Bible studies and working among people) had special events at the church to bring people together.  In the Wednesday gathering led by my friends, Jeser & Aying, almost 400 people attended and 168 of them prayed to receive Christ!  Then on Thursday, at the network led by another couple I love, Junfer & Princess, the attendance was 369 and 23 precious people received Christ, including the newly-crowned beauty queen of the festival I mentioned in the opening sentence! And get this: she’s a Muslim princess from a minority tribe that is comprised of militant Muslims – but she came to Jesus in Davao this week!  I love what God is doing at our Philippines campus!
  • next was a text from Pastor Eric at our Lisle campus, where the band from Davao did a great job leading worship.  (One highlight: an ex-cult member who first heard of CLC via my radio broadcast on WYLL, and had recently been water baptized by Pastor Eric, attended a discipleship class with a Lisle elder about the Holy Spirit this morning, and was filled during the worship set!  If you’re counting, that’s 3 CLC campuses & at least 4 groups of people involved in her experience!) Eric also reports that the message really connected and people are “fired-up”, including some of their new members who are “about to make heaven a little bit bigger” – he called it ‘a great day’!
  • Then I heard from Pastor Jaime at our Hispanic campus, who said “the Presence of God was so real today”.  They add one new member this morning, and he’s already looking forward to next week!
  • Finally I received a great email from Pastor Jim Garrett, who was in South Bend today as the Neal’s concluded their vacation.  He said it was an excellent crowd of hungry worshipers, and that JOY broke out among them, not only in the worship set, but erupted again at the close of the message just as the Israelites had joy over understanding the Word of God.  Their campus picnic afterward was also the scene of much joy, food, horseshoes, football & kids on the playground!
  • Pastor Doug also weighed in that he really appreciated Pastors Jim & Cheri sharing their testimony, as many people commented afterwards it was just what they needed.  Their level of transparency was appreciated and well received.

That just leaves the Tinley Park campus for this Sunday.  Where do I start?

  • I’ll begin with the last activity of the day: had a great ‘next steps’ membership class today with some enthusiastic new folks who are joining our ministry!
  • How about the GREAT kick-off for Life Groups, where more people registered for groups today than usual, and the buzz in the lobby was deafening!
  • I LOVED preaching this message about ‘relevance’ – especially because of the tremendous reception by our church family!
  • How about the testimonies from Anthony Gomez, Aaron Pachol, Kiara Gomez and Angel Solis?  Loved their raw honesty and their stories of life-change made possible by our Youth Camp! With youth like this coming on at CLC, the future is bright!  (Got all teary-eyed just listening to them!)
  • How about this fact: on the day that I talked about why we stream our services and the web, a first-time online guest prayed to receive Jesus at the close of the 9:30 service! Even more amazing, is that’s the ONLY service today where I led people in a sinner’s prayer- (only God!)
  • Still can’t get over how MANY CLCers are involved in the educational arena – seems like the whole congregation was standing when we closed with prayer for all teachers, administrators, cafeteria workers, school nurses and bus drivers – WOW!  And I’m still praying for each of them to be “the 13th man” in their school!  (if you don’t understand that, get the CD)
  • Quick Question for Tinley Park CLCers: do I always yell that much for no reason? Man, I was charged today – in case you can’t tell, I love talking about our core values!  It is our LEGACY!

Hope you’ll invite a friend for NEXT Sunday when we examine the value of PRESENCE! (I’m expecting an outpouring of the Holy Spirit at each campus!)

That’s a wrap for this Sunday….gonna spend some couch time with the family now-

Time for more Scripture Memory!

I think this weeks verse is familiar to most of us.  But let’s not read this as “just another verse”.  Instead, let’s put it to action, in faith, knowing that our God is for us!

Matt 7:7

7 “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.

What are you asking for this week?

Ask the Pastor

My favorite questioner is back, and she writes, “My question is in regards to Jeremiah 29:11 which is an inspiration to me as well as a lot of people. Well, I took a lot of comfort in this scripture until I was reading an article which says that a lot of people get this scripture confused.  The author said that most people take this scripture out of context. He said that God was talking to Israel when He said this. So my next and very important question to you is how do we know when to apply scripture to our life and keep it in the right context.  For instance, I hear a lot of preachers take one or two verses out of the Bible and apply it to what they are preaching on that particular day.  I’m not a preacher but I do the same thing myself when I am trying to prove a point or when I am trying to comfort myself about something that maybe does not pertain to what I am going through. A lot of times if we read the whole chapter and not just a couple of verses, it’s not pertaining to our situation at all.  Or is it alright if we take what we read in that chapter and apply it to our life whatever the situation may be?”

Wow….GREAT question!  I think this is truly an IMPORTANT question, because it affects everyone reading this post.  Let me try to sort it out for you:

While it is no doubt true that Jeremiah 29:11 in context is God speaking to Israel – specifically, about the fact that they were about to be taken captive into Babylon, but that HE was watching over them, and in spite of the fact that their circumstances looked bleak, HE had good plans for their future.  No question that this is the correct interpretation & context of that passage.

However, I would strongly disagree with the idea that just because a verse was not originally written specifically to me that I cannot apply it to my life!  There are numerous examples in Scripture where a ‘word’ was spoken in prophecy to someone and it had a literal fulfillment for that person or group – but it also had a prophetic or figurative or some would say spiritual fulfillment for another person or group at another time.  For instance, Isaiah 28:11-12 if you study it in context, is a message to Israel that God will cause them to be ruled by foreigners whose language will sound like ‘stammering lips’ or ‘another tongue’ to the Israeli’s.  Yet, the Apostle Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit applied that passage to Christians in Corinth who spoke in tongues – see ICor. 14:21-25.  And I believe I’m on solid footing to apply that passage today to any believer who prays in tongues and finds that it IS a “rest and a refreshing”!

I do understand the danger of taking Scripture out of context and trying to make it mean something it doesn’t.  (You’ve probably heard of the guy who tried to get guidance by just opening his Bible at random & ‘claiming’ the verse he read there, until one day he read Matthew 27:5, then opened to Luke 10:37, and finally opened John 13:27!) No, the Bible isn’t teaching us to commit suicide – and taking verses out of context can be just that dangerous.

But at the same time, there are principles in God’s Word that DO apply to all generations and everywhere in the world – even though the verse may have been written 4,000 years ago to someone in the Middle East!  So my recommendation is to allow the Holy Spirit to guide you as you read (after all – He is the author – 2Tim 3:16; 2Pet 1:20-21), illuminating various verses and passages that you can apply to your situation today.  That’s exactly what Romans 15:1-4 is saying about all of God’s Word!

Hope this helps.  Now, what would YOU like to Ask the Pastor?

T-minus 30!

That’s a military & NASA term – the ‘T’ refers to time of a flight or project, and the ‘minus’ refers to the period that comes before that begins.

So what, you ask?

SO…..we are just 30 days away from launching our newest campus, “CLC 1929″!

That’s right: on September 17 at 5pm we’ll kick-off our new worship experience with a target audience of twenty-somethings (thus the name, 19-29). Sam & Taylor Hamstra will be the directors, and Brent McQuay & Ed Marroquin will serve with Sam on the speaking team, while Caleb Baker will lead worship.

NOTE: this service is open to ANYONE of any age – but we’re targeting the under-30 crowd. It’s one way we’re determined to reach the next generation and remain relevant at CLC.  (And by having the service here at the Tinley Park campus, we’re saving the expense of launching another location with rent, utilities, etc.) That’s what I call maximizing our investment for the Kingdom!

So with just 30 days left until launch, I’m asking you to tell it to all your friends & co-workers – help us get the Word out!  You can also go to our Facebook page and “like” us, so you can stay abreast of the latest news & happenings at CLC 1929.

If you’re interested in being a part of the launch team, please contact Sam Hamstra today-

off to South Bend!

Got a full day of work and meetings here in the office first, but this afternoon I’ll be headed to our South Bend campus with the worship band from our Davao City, Philippines campus.  These young men were SUCH a blessing to our Youth Camp last week, as in Tinley Park during the Empower Conference, so we wanted them to get to see our other campuses.  (They’ll be leading worship in Lisle this Sunday).

But I’m excited about tonight, because it’s my first time back in South Bend in waaaaay too long, and I’ve heard such good reports about what God is doing there through the leadership of Pastors Doug & Shanna Neal.  It’ll be a fun night of worship with the Filipino’s and some Word from yours truly.

All my South Bend friends, c’mon out tonight at 7pm – looking forward to seeing you again!

Light is good!

Woke up this morning thinking about the last point of last Sunday’s message – specifically about James 5:16.  Didn’t have time to explain it all Sunday, but the Biblical principle that makes confession to another believer so effective is this: light is good!

That’s what God Himself said in Genesis 1:4, whereas darkness in the Bible is synonymous with evil (Mt 6:23; Lk 22:53; Jn 3:19). So when we keep our sins & faults hidden in secret, in effect, we keep them in darkness, which is Satan’s playground! (Ever heard of ‘home-field advantage’?)

But when we confess those faults or sins, we are bringing them into the light, and that’s good! In fact, there’s something about just bringing it out in the open to someone that actually helps to break the power of that thing against us!  It’s the message of Proverbs 28:13!

You don’t have to wait for our Life Group kick-off to start doing this – all you need is a trusted friend, who will love you & pray with you instead of judging you.

But as I said Sunday, if you don’t have those kind of relationships right now, I can’t think of a better place to start building them than in a Life Group of believers here at CLC.

Remember: light is good!

Sunday reflections

Sitting here on my loveseat in our family room, reflecting on today around CLC, I’m tired! I’ve gotten so used to having others to help lead services, receive offerings, baptize & even lead communion has made me soft! At least that’s my conclusion after a day with all that activity while our pastors were at Camp & my wife was in South Bend – I’m wiped out.  So before the TV watches me tonight (as my daughter would say), here’s a quick recap around the CLC campuses today:

  • First report came from Davao City, Philippines, where Pastor Herley reports another 46 young people gave their lives to Christ in their Regeneration service on Friday, plus 32 more in their Sunday services today, which were attended by 789 people!  He said there was a powerful ministry of the Word today as well, as REVIVAL continues in the Philippines!
  • Pastor Eric says the Lisle campus had to overcome a number of challenges today in “the tent” (a few times per year, the hotel we meet in rents our meeting room to other groups, and we have to meet in a pavilion at the front of the property).  Despite those hindrances, he felt there was a real work of the Spirit done in many hearts today, with a strong attendance and several new families in worship today
  • My wife ministered in South Bend today in the absence of the Neal’s, who are enjoying a much-deserved vacation, and she says there was a powerful move of the Spirit, as she closed the message by leading the congregation in prayer & declarations of faith!
  • Finally, at the Tinley campus, I thoroughly enjoyed kicking off the ‘LEGACY’ series today with a look at the core value of Authenticity.  Loved the lobby conversations with folks who value relationship over religion and grace over rule-keeping! (As I expected, sounds like we’ve ALL had experience with Pharisees!)  Most of all, I’m thankful for “without wax” Christians, who don’t try to hide their issues, but confess them to others in a safe place, so they can receive prayer & be healed! (James 5:16I didn’t have time today to explain one reason WHY that works – but the Biblical principle is that when we keep things hidden in ‘darkness’, it plays into Satan’s advantage, since he’s the prince of darkness.  But by bringing our faults into the light by confessing to others, we break its power against us, and the prayers of others can bring healing of that issue for us!
  • As always, I was especially thankful for people who prayed to receive Christ at the close of EACH service today – probably about 8-10 in all!  That just never gets old!!!
  • In addition, I received a text from the “CHARGE” Youth Camp that reported about 5-6 of our students were born-again (which is probably every person who attended camp that wasn’t born-again already!) and another 4-5 who were baptized in the Holy Spirit.  Youth Director Sam Hamstra said the Camp was “absolutely life-changing”!
  • Finally, I love this report from CLCer Don Murphy, who stood up during the Empower Conference when Marilyn Hickey asked people to stand for healing, or to stand on behalf of someone they loved who needed healing.  Don stood for his father, who kidney failure required him to have dialysis 3-4 times per week, and who has been on a donor list for 2-3 years without success.  Last night he received a call of a matching donor, and had surgery today to receive his new kidney!

That pretty well sums it up…..time now to recharge my batteries, because NEXT Sunday is timely: We Value Relevance!

Scripture Memory

This week’s verse is a continuation from last week…..

Proverbs 3:8 NLT

“Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones.”

Another great reason to not rely on your own wisdom but TRUST in the LORD and live with the assurance (and peace) that HE has your back!

Are you finding the verses you commit to memory come to mind when you need them? That’s the plan!

Ask the Pastor

One of our next generation leaders at CLC writes, “Pastor, my question is… in Romans 14:11 when it says every knee shall bow, does it mean believers or does it mean when people see God, believer or not, every knee shall bow?”

Good question.  Actually, it’s a GREAT question, because it’s one that can be answered by the Scripture itself, without any conjecture on my part.

I say that because actually in Romans 14:11, Paul is quoting the Old Testament prophet, Isaiah – chapter 45, verses 22-23, to be exact.  Romans 14:11 clearly begins by saying “as the Scriptures say”, showing that Paul intentionally was quoting from Isaiah’s prophecy.  In fact, he quoted that same passage again in Philippians 2:9-11.

The answer to your question was probably apparent as you read the other two references, as In Isaiah, he began the prophecy by stating that He was speaking to “all the ends of the earth”, and in Philippians Paul said that every knee would bow – “those in heaven”, “on earth” and even “under the earth”. So the correct answer to your question is that someday EVERY knee will bow to the Lord Jesus Christ – not just believers – but EVERY knee of EVERY person on earth!

I especially like the fact that in Isaiah’s prophecy it was clearly JEHOVAH God who was speaking, that every knee would bow to HIM, yet in Philippians it’s just as clear that every knee will bow to Jesus, proving once again that the God of the Old Testament IS the God of the New Testament as well – and we are privileged to serve that One True God!

Hope that helps.  Now, what would YOU like to Ask the Pastor?

Empower 2011 recap

Well, Empower 2011 is now history, but the rejoicing continues:

  • I think we had the largest non-special-holiday (not Easter or OneFamily service, etc) attendance in our history, with more than 1,700 different people here on Sunday morning (there were cars parked everywhere!)
  • We heard 10 full-length messages and another 3 or 4 shorter teachings in just 3 days – and every one of them contained valuable insights & inspiration!  You can still order the entire set for $40 on CD’s, plus we will have mp3′s available that you can download to your computer for just $25 – we’ll let you know once they’re available for purchase on our website.
  • Most important of all, there were a few people born-again, AND about 35-40 people who were baptized in the Holy Spirit!

Now that’s what I call, ‘empowered’!

I can’t wait for this Sunday, when we kick-off the new series, “LEGACY”, as we explore the values that brought CLC this far & will also take us into the future! Invite a friend to join you!

Tuesday at Empwer 2011

To answer my own question from this last post, YES!

Honestly, without any hype, exaggeration or ‘preacher-talk’ (sometimes called ‘evangelastically speaking’), Empower 2011 is hard to summarize:

  • this morning’s teaching from Pastor Bob Yandian about the Queen of Sheba’s visit to Solomon will be required listening for everyone in leadership at CLC-
  • Pastor Marilyn’s ‘nuggets’ about going beyond the ‘expected’ to instead do the ‘exceptional’ so that God can do the ‘extraordinary’ was worth the entire conference-
  • Tim Ross only had a few minutes in the pulpit today, but he was, well…..Tim Ross!
  • Marilyn’s insight & stories tonight about reaping many harvests from the same seed sown was life-changing for me!
  • Bob’s revelation that Jesus didn’t spit on the blind man, but on the blindness was electrifying!
  • GET THIS: about 10 people came forward to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit tonight, and EVERY ONE OF THEM received! (including a young boy who was born-again minutes earlier!)
  • AND we even heard a Spirit-filled, Filipino rapper!

That’s all I’ve got to say about that.

If you weren’t here, you can order the entire conference on CD for $40.  It will also be available soon in mp3 format on our website for a reduced cost if you want to download.

I hope you’ll invite someone to be your guest this Sunday as we begin “LEGACY” – exploring what makes this church tick! See you then-

Monday night Empower Conf.

Can it keep getting better?

Last night with Pastor Bob Yandian & Pastor Marilyn Hickey was just so full of practical WISDOM – for everyday life, no matter your status!

At the close of the service, Marilyn invited those who wanted to be baptized in the Holy Spirit to come forward, and around 18-20 people were filled!  (That’s in addition to a half-dozen or more on Sunday morning when Andrew Wommack was here – so a whole lot of CLCers & our guests have truly been EMPOWERED at these meetings!)  Included in that number were several young men & women who’ve grown up at CLC, so it was especially touching for several CLC parents!

I love what God is doing among us – and there are still TWO more opportunities for you to get in on it – this morning at 9:30am and tonight at 7pm – get in the building!

Monday reflections

Never. Heard. Anything. Like. It.

If you weren’t there this morning, you probably haven’t heard that the flight bringing Pastors Bob Yandian & Marilyn Hickey to Chicago was delayed significantly due to weather issues in Tulsa, and then traffic jams on the Tri-State kept them from reaching CLC until the services were already dismissed.

I don’t think God was surprised.

Actually, HE awakened Tim Ross this morning with an entirely new message just for CLC.  Tim brought that at the first morning session, and it was off-the-charts! If you’ve ever felt like God wasn’t acting fast enough on your behalf, or that you’ve been waiting a long time for a promise to be manifest, get the CD!

Then, since our other guests still hadn’t arrived, Tim finally preached the message he intended to bring all along – “Stay in Your Lane”.  I’m going to make it required listening for anyone in leadership at CLC in the future – seriously, it was absolutely ridiculous, in the most positive use of that word.

Sure enjoyed worship with the Danzy’s from our South Bend campus and of course, the ‘Firstborn’ band from our Davao, Philippines campus, too.

You’ve got time to get here tonight at 7pm for Bob Yandian & Marilyn Hickey, and then we’ll do it all over again tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.  Get EMPOWERED!

Sunday (afternoon) reflections

Never. Seen. It. So. Full.

This morning had to be the largest attendance for a non-Easter or non-special occasion (our 20th Anniversary celebration last year had over 2,200 at the Convention Center, but that included all the other campuses) – our ushers counted 1,818 people today in the 3 morning services at Tinley Park.  (Disclaimer: some of those attended more than one service, so the actual number of people was probably in the high-1,600′s or low 1,700′s).  WOW!  In the last 2 services, every chair was taken, the new soft seating areas in both corners were filled, and people were sitting on the floor there and along the wall.  The parking lot was even crazier, with a number of cars parked in the grass & ditch in front of the church!  Know what this tells me?  People are HUNGRY for truth!

And truth is what they got from Andrew Wommack in all 3 services, as he opened up 2Cor 4:17-18 and 2Cor 5:7 for us. I’d encourage you to get all 3 messages on CD – it was that good! We also rejoiced that people were baptized in the Holy Spirit after his teaching in each service, including a few CLCers, but several of our guests!

Elsewhere at CLC today:

  • Pastor Eric reports a “deep, deep move of God today” at our Lisle campus & said one thing built upon another from worship to communion to the crescendo at the message from Michael Hawks.  Strong attendance there, too!
  • Pastor Doug says the service in South Bend this morning was “indescribable”, and he believes it radically changed the direction of their campus and the people of our church family there!  He delivered a strong prophetic word and prayed for people afterwards as the Spirit of God moved mightily in the house!
  • I haven’t yet received the Sunday report from our Davao, Philippines campus, but at their Friday night Youth service (Regeneration), in spite of the fact that their youth pastor & worship band is here with us (didn’t you enjoy them in Tinley this morning!), they still had over 400 youth in attendance and 46 young people prayed to receive Christ!  (There’s REVIVAL in Davao!)

We’re waiting now for the arrival of Tim Ross, whose flight from Miami was delayed – but we’ll turn him loose tonight as soon as he gets inside – so come join us for a great night of worship & the Word, starting at 6pm.  Of course, Empower 2011 continues on Monday & Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. and 7pm.  (So many have asked about the schedule: the plan is for Tim, Marilyn & Bob to each speak in each service – of course, some of them will be brief teachings of 15-20 minutes, while others will be 45-60 minutes, but we expect to hear from each of them in each service)

See you here!

Time for Scripture Memory…..

After 29 weeks of memorizing God’s word, is it finally starting to sink in how practical God’s word is to our everyday life?  I love this book and I love putting these verses to memory each week with you!  This will be another 2 week passage –

Proverbs 3:7 - Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom.
Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil. – NLT

Guess HE got all of us with that one…..haven’t we all been ‘impressed’ with our own wisdom at times? Happy memorizing!

Ask the Pastor

One of my favorite new CLCers writes, “can a believer lose his/her salvation? if so, does that mean the conversion wasn’t genuine, i.e. the person wasn’t really saved to begin with?”

Ahhh, good question.  Actually, this is one of the primary questions contained in the teaching of unconditional eternal security, otherwise known as “once saved, always saved”. I’ve addressed that issue several times through the years, and consistently, each time I answer I always begin by saying, “I hope I’m wrong on this issue”.

I mean it. If I’m wrong in my understanding of what Scripture teaches on this subject, then there will be more people in heaven than I’m expecting, and that’s a good thing!  (Of course, if I’m right in my understanding of Scripture, then there will be a lot of people tragically surprised to NOT be in heaven…..don’t think I’d want to take my chances with this one.)

Having said that, back to your original question – I personally believe that a believer can lose his salvation, if he/she chooses to walk away from the Lord, instead of continuing in the faith.  I base that opinion on numerous Scriptures including 1Cor 10:1-12; 1Cor 9:24-27; 2Pet 2:20-22; 2Pet 1:4-10; Matt 25:1-13; Jude 3-4; Rev 2:4-5; 1Tim 4:1-2; and Heb 10:19-39)

Let me also say just as quickly that I do NOT believe in what some have called “eternal insecurity”! In other words, just because I think it’s possible for someone to lose their salvation doesn’t mean that I live in fear or insecurity every day, as though my eternal salvation depended on my good works.  I rest secure knowing that John 10:27-29 IS true, and that NO ONE, including my enemy, can snatch me out of the Father’s hand!  He is able to keep me from falling (Jude 1:24) and I have an incorruptible inheritance reserved in heaven for me, while I am being kept by the power of God (1Pet. 1:3-5)!

As to the second part of your question, which is the common statement made by those who do subscribe to ‘unconditional eternal security’, namely, that a person who walks away from the Lord was never saved in the first place – well, personally, I find no evidence in Scripture to support that idea.  In my humble opinion, that’s just a man-made ‘answer’ to attempt to explain why/how someone who at one time professed to be a Christian could walk away from the Lord and perhaps even commit heinous acts of crime.  Again, I think it’s possible for someone to truly be saved and have a genuine experience with the Lord, but due to their own choices in life, later walk away from that salvation and deny the Lord who bought them. (see 2Pet. 2:1-3)

Someone quicker-witted than me has said, “I believe in ‘once saved, always saved’, as long as you stay saved”! I guess that pretty well sums up my understanding of the New Testament as well.

Remember – I hope I’m wrong.

I also hope this helped a bit.  Now, what would YOU like to ask the Pastor?

A new day….

Chris & I attended the opening night of “Jesus Culture Awakening” last night at the AllState Arena in Rosemont.

It was loud. (15,000 people can make a lot of noise)

It was BIG.  (Think about it: Jesus Culture Band, Hillsong United, Reinhard Bonnke, Cindy Jacobs, Lou Engle & Bill Johnson in the same program – plus a bunch of others)

It felt historic.  (The kids would probably say, ‘EPIC’)

I say ‘historic’ because I’ve never seen anything like it – the hunger for God, the passion of thousands of young people from several nations, all gathering in one place to stoke their desire for more of God, more signs & wonders, more social justice, more getting the job of evangelism done – it was absolutely unreal! Chris said it almost felt like the Pentecost of Acts 2 all over again.

One thing I know: we are not alone at CLC in our ‘mandate’ to reach this next generation! If anything we may be a little slow to catch up with what God is doing, but we’re certainly following His heartbeat.

BTW, occasionally I hear rumors that the 40-and-up members of CLC are feeling overlooked or neglected as we focus so much attention on reaching the younger generation.  Can I weigh-in on that issue?  As pastor, I really believe that’s a MAJOR LIE of the enemy to hinder & derail what God is doing at CLC.  I mean, think about it: if we’re going to reach the next generation, WHO is going to do the ‘reaching’? We must have spiritually mature, seasoned ‘moms & dads’ of the faith who are willing to pour into the next generation – modeling & encouraging & showing them the way to be all that God is calling them to be!

That’s probably the healthiest thing I saw last night, too – this generation of firebrands is quick to acknowledge that it’s because of their mothers & fathers of the faith that they are gathering in Rosemont this week.  Make no mistake: it’s the ENEMY who would seek to divide us in some kind of generation ‘gap’ and it’s GOD who is turning the hearts of fathers to their children to enable an unprecedented end-time harvest of souls coming to Jesus!

I’m so glad we get to be a part of that.

Sunday reflections

Pure FUN!  That’s how I’d describe today’s “Family Sunday” at CLC.  I would have to agree with several who said they hated to see “God@the Movies” come to a close – I think it’s been the all-time favorite series at CLC, and I’m already looking forward to next July.  (Oh yeah, we’re gonna do it again – with 4 different movies!) Here’s a quick recap of the day around our campuses:

  • Pastor Doug was the first to weigh in regarding our South Bend campus, where he said there were ‘sighs of disappointment’ after most of the clips today, as people were really ‘into’ the movie, as well as the message!  He also said the children loved it, but the adults seemed to have way more fun with it!
  • Our Lisle campus ROCKED today with great worship, a kid’s choir & kid’s violin solo before the Grand Slam of a message, and they witnessed 6 water baptisms & 7 salvation commitments afterwards!  Despite the blistering heat & midsummer vacations, their attendance was in the 140′s today & Pastor Eric is pumped about gearing up this Fall!
  • I hardly know where to begin regarding Tinley Park.  First of all, our attendance for this series was UNREAL, as we had over 1,300 again today – that’s 3 weeks out of 4 that we were probably 200 or more above our norm for summertime – and last week’s low could certainly be blamed on the storms that whipped thru the south suburbs during our services.  But that’s not all:
  • We had somewhere over a dozen salvation commitments today – several by our children who worshiped with us for Family Sunday.  Speaking of the children, how ’bout that Kids Dance team?!?  I’ve never seen moves like that, even on ‘Dancing with the Stars’, and the energy those kids brought was palpable!
  • Like the other campuses, the whole series & especially today’s look at ‘Toy Story 3′ really captivated all of us.  I told someone that I think this series boosted video rentals throughout Chicagoland for the whole month of July, as so many told me they were going to get the video to watch “the whole story”.  It was just a TON of FUN in the summertime, and I’m looking forward to next year already.
  • Heard RAVE reports about the makeover, especially the audio & video improvements – MEGA KUDOS to Media Director Eduardo Marroquin for HOURS of time spent making it happen these past few weeks.  He not only helped with all the installation, but his work with the video clips for each message in “God@the Movies” is what made it all so enjoyable for the rest of us – so THANKS, Ed!
  • And SPECIAL THANKS to each of you who are already responding to the need to purchase chairs for the auditorium!  CLCers are a generous people, and I’m thankful for the privilege of serving you-
  • By the way, our Hispanic ministry was very blessed today to host the ministry of Bryce Manderfield, who is spearheading an incredible youth movement in several nations of Latin America.  Bryce is in Chicagoland for meetings this week, and we were privileged to have him minister at CVC while he’s in town, plus several of us get to pick his brain before he leaves!
  • Just heard from Pastor Herley at our Davao City campus, where 31 people gave their lives to Christ in their Sunday services.  Even more amazing is that one of their leaders had a special ‘harvest’ event for her network of small groups yesterday, and 96 people prayed to receive Christ there!  It’s REVIVAL time in the Philippines – all the more reason that I’m excited to welcome the Praise Band from Herley’s church to Empower 2011 next week!

Now it’s time to start getting ready for Empower 2011 with Andrew Wommack, Tim Ross, Marilyn Hickey & Bob Yandian.  It’s going to be an incredible 3-days of power-packed ministry, and I hope you get in on ALL of it!  If you didn’t hear the special announcement today, the Praise Band from our Davao City, Philippines campus will be here for the conference (and for Youth Camp afterwards) – what a treat!  You only have a few days to INVITE your friends & family – so help us get the Word out through phone calls, text messages, social media – every way that you can!

Whew….what a day!

Scripture memory time….

This week’s verse may step on some toes, but I think we all need an occasional reminder from the Holy Spirit as to how we  are to behave:

Ephesians 4:29 NIV

29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Are you building each other up with the words you speak?  Let’s apply this verse to our EVERYDAY lives this week and see what a difference it makes!

Ask the Pastor

One of my favorite front-row singers wrote in response to this post, “Awesome post! Such a huge question!  So what about the common rapture scripture that talks about the dead in Christ rising first? If the righteous go immediately to heaven (to be absent from the body…), is that the earthly body catching up with the spirit man?”

Thanks….I’m glad someone is reading & finding this Ask the Pastor feature helpful!  And I love it when folks answer their own questions!

YES, that’s exactly my understanding of what happens in 1Thess. 4:13-18.  In fact, note that verse 14 indicates that God will bring these “dead saints” back with Him, but then later in verse 16 tells us that the Christians who have died will rise from their graves.  My understanding is that their spirit has been with Jesus in heaven from the moment of their death, but their earthly body will be reunited with their spirit when Christ returns.

So you answered your own question – thanks for the help!

Now, what would YOU like to Ask the Pastor?

Israel trips

Last night’s service with Rabbi Eitan Shishkoff was absolutely wonderful! Throughout his presentation, and then after service during our conversation over a bite to eat, it was obvious that God is joining us with him and the Tikkun ministries as genuine partners in reaching out to the Jewish people!  I am both humbled and grateful for the privilege of connecting with Tikkun!

For the benefit of those who were not able to join us last night, I’m attaching the description of our 2012 “Stand with Israel” Tour, and the registration form for those who plan to make the journey to the Holy Land with us.  I know it will be the trip of a lifetime, and I’m already excited, even though it’s still 7 months away!  Here are those documents: FLYER- McQuay Feb 2012 Registration Form – McQuay Feb 2012

In addition to that tour, CLC is also planning a missions trip in late November, specifically to work among the Holocaust survivors in the northern city of Haifa.  Our partner there is Leon Mazin with “Return to Zion” ministries, and this trip will also include some sightseeing in addition to serving a very needed ministry outreach.  If you’re interested in that trip, please let us know.

Tonight is the night!

I arrived safely from South Africa yesterday & jumped back in with a couple of meetings – much appreciation to ALL those who covered the bases for me while I was in Africa.

Just wanted to give a quick shout about TONIGHT’S very special service with our partner in Israel, Rabbi Eitan Shishkoff. His ministry is sure to bless you tonight, AND you can also learn how YOU can be a part of our 2012 tour of Israel – so if you’ve ever wanted to visit the Holy Land, tonight’s the night!  Hope to see you here-

South Africa, Day 2

Just got back to our hotel after a FULL day: enjoyed teaching at Pastor Umanah’s church this morning & especially grateful for a wonderful response in the altar.  Then Pastor Eric & I had a pretty intense lunch with the Umanah’s about their desire to become a campus of CLC.  (We’re seeking to discern God’s will in this decision, so we don’t want to leave any stone unturned as we go).

Afterwards, Pastor Umanah gave us a grand tour of Jo’burg by car – can’t believe the quantity & size of the shopping malls here!  One highlight was visiting Soweto – which makes me determined to read up on the history of that place that was instrumental in bringing down apartheid.

My curiosity is off the charts about how things are at CLC today – especially knowing all the changes in audio & video at the Tinley Park campus that happened while I was in Africa this week.  I’m also anxious to hear about “God@the Movies” today, knowing my wife had some hard-hitting truths to share.  Finally, I’m interested in hearing about each of our campuses – so if you attended anywhere at CLC today, would you leave your comments below to help your pastor know how things went.  (I even logged on just now to watch the 11:30am service, only to discover the construction schedule this past week prevented us from being able to do a livestream today – do I really NEED you to comment!).

Thanks in advance for helping your pastor out-

Tomorrow we’ll spend six hours with Pastor Umanah before heading to the airport for the first leg of our journey toward Chicago that won’t end until about 24 hours later – thanks for the prayers!

Scripture Memory

Here is the second part of the verse we learned last week…

2 Timothy 3:17 – “ God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”

I’m so thankful for HIS word that teaches, prepares and equips us for EVERY good work!  Aren’t you!  That’s another reason why we are memorizing scripture every work!  If we don’t know HIS word, how can we be equipped!

South Africa, Day 1

I started to say that we had an uneventful departure from Ethiopia this morning, but that wouldn’t be entirely accurate.  When we checked in for our flight to Johannesburg, we learned that we would not be admitted into South Africa without a Yellow Fever vaccination.  (Mine was expired & Eric had never had one).  Fortunately for us, it was available at the airport for the princely sum of about $3.87.  Both of us were a little skittish about being immunized in Ethiopia & even more so when we saw the size of the needle, but you would have been proud of us as we took it like a man!

At least the flight was uneventful and we arrived in Jo’burg without incident (5.5 hrs later – Africa is a HUGE continent!) and spent the rest of the day with Pastor Ernest Umanah.

The highlight was sharing a teaching session with his local church Bible school students tonight, and I must say, Pastor Eric was a BEAST!  His teaching on leadership was as good as I’ve ever heard, and I couldn’t have been more proud!

We’ll spend Sunday with Pastor Umanah’s congregation and report to you later.

Meanwhile, it’s not too late for you to invite someone to be your guest on Sunday at any CLC campus for a look at “Transformers” as our ‘God@the Movies’ series continues.  If you can’t join us in person, join us online at www.clctoday.org/live –     at 8, 9:30 or 11:30 a.m.  I’m expecting someone’s life to be transformed!

Ethiopia, Day 4

Today was definitely the highlight of my first visit to Ethiopia.  First of all, with the missions & teaching ‘giants’ who made up the speaking team this week (David Shearman, David Shibley & Ron Hibbert), I really felt like the new kid on the block.  But upon arrival this morning, Assefa, my interpreter yesterday informed me that most of the conversations among the pastors last night were centered around what I had taught about partnering with their wives as a ministry team and the importance of reaching children.  Then after the final session today, the national leader asked 3 pastors to briefly summarize what had impacted them most from the conference, and each one of them mentioned those same two teachings!  It was all I could do to keep from crying – so humbling to think that I could be a part of impacting these precious pastors, some of whom traveled 2 days by bus just to come to the conference.

Then we were entertained by Kenesa’s parents, Debela & Hannah.  I had met Debela a few years ago when he was in Chicago visiting his son, so I knew what a gracious leader he is, but his wife was also so sweet, with a genuine gift of hospitality.  They welcomed us into their home, prepared a wonderful lunch for us (best meal I’ve had since I arrived!) and then served the traditional coffee that is a must-do here.  Afterwards, Debela drove us to the theological grad school where he was one of the founders and from which he only recently retired.  It’s an impressive building in a beautiful setting overlooking the city of Addis Ababa, and it was great to see it.  Finally, he took us to the main market downtown (reportedly the largest open-air market in all of Africa) so Eric & I had a chance to pick up a few souvenirs.

We still have one appointment tonight – a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony at the home of Pastor Teklu (see this post) and then a short night before boarding our flight to Johannesburg in the morning.

Enjoy a few pics from today-

Ask the Pastor

A longtime, faithful CLCer writes, “Please explain what the Grace Covenant teaching is. I know what Jesus did on the cross for us. I was told that you do not have to confess your sins because of what Jesus did on the cross, but it clearly states in 1 Jn 1:9, ‘If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.’ Confused!!!!”

Interesting question.  I suppose ALL of us should be confused as to why any born-again believer would teach a doctrine that so clearly contradicts Scripture – so if that’s why you’re confused, let me help you easily by saying I John 1:9 is still in effect, and it IS part of our covenant under grace, too!  So if anyone ‘tells’ you that you don’t have to obey a clear instruction from Scripture (and a wonderful promise, I might add!), then you can simply quote Acts 4:19 and Acts 5:29 to them!

Back to your first question as to the “Grace Covenant”, you might be interested to know that those words never appear together in Scripture! So, while I understand the meaning behind the term, the truth is that the New Testament never refers to the covenant relationship that all of us as believers enjoy today as a “grace covenant”.

Nonetheless, all of us who have received Christ do live in covenant relationship with Him, and we are all recipients of His AMAZING, incredibly-wonderful grace, which is generally defined as “unmerited or undeserved favor”I get chill-bumps just thinking about it! In other words, we did nothing to earn it or deserve it; it’s a free gift from God to us made possible by the death of Jesus Christ!  Those of us who once were lost, bound in our own sinful habits, headed straight for eternity in hell, are instead now forgiven & free, walking in His marvelous favor and on our way to an eternal reward with Him in heaven — all because of what Jesus did for us at the Cross almost 2,o0o years ago! (see Gal. 2:15-16; Eph. 2:8-9; Eph. 1:3-8; Eph. 2:1-7)

That ‘covenant’ also means, as the late Dottie Rambo put it in one of her songs, “He sees me through the Blood”; i.e., when God looks at us today, He doesn’t see us as hopelessly messed-up in our own failings and weaknesses; He sees us as the “righteousness of God in Christ”, made blameless in His sight — again, all because of the blood of Jesus!  (Rom. 3:21-22; Col. 1:21-22)

That is the Grace Covenant, as I understand it in Scripture.

The problem that sometimes occurs is when people go beyond the words of Scripture and start adding their own interpretation to it (or diss the Bible altogether), as in the situation you described, when someone told you we no longer have to confess our sins to God.  That concept/teaching is found NO WHERE in Scripture, either in the first covenant or the new covenant!

In fact, some false teachers have gone so far as to embrace an age-old heresy known as “universalism”, that has ALWAYS been rejected by The Church. Universalism basically says that, in the end, God loves everyone so much He just cannot send anyone to hell, and so everyone is saved (some just don’t know it yet). That teaching resurrects every once in a while, and has gained some steam in recent months with the publication of a book called, “Love Wins” – but I repeat, that teaching has NEVER been accepted by the New Testament body of believers as Biblical truth.

I could go on and on, but hopefully you see my point.  I hope this helped.

Now, what would YOU like to Ask the Pastor?

a holy Jihad

It seems like at each of these Global Advance pastor’s conferences I’ve participated in, there’s always at least one pastor that we really connect with.  For Pastor Eric of our Lisle campus (who’s making his first ever CLC missions trip!) that person is definitely Pastor Jihad.

Yup…you read that right.  His name is Jihad, and until about 4 years ago, he was a militant Muslim.  That all changed when Jesus appeared to him in a vision, and he turned his back on Islam to receive Jesus as his savior.  As a result, his entire family disowned him, and he was even imprisoned for a time.  While he was in jail, his wife & 2 children were given to his younger brother, and Jihad was told that he would never see them again.

I wonder how many of us would have persevered in our new faith after that kind of treatment? Selah.

In the past few years, Jihad has not only grown as a believer, but he has started 3 churches!

He & Eric have really hit it off here, and his story has impacted all of us.  I thought you’d enjoy meeting him, too:

Pastor Eric & Pastor Jihad

humbled to know men like this

We’ve got a couple more sessions this morning to close out the conference…..more reports later-

By the way, CLCers, it’s NOT TOO LATE to invite someone to be your guest this Sunday – perhaps their life will be “Transformed” when ‘God@the Movies’ takes on this summer’s blockbuster!

Ethiopia, Day 3

Finished my final 2 sessions this afternoon by teaching 2 of my favorite topics at these type conferences: (a) the advantages of husband-and-wife ministry teams, and (b) the importance/priority of reaching children.  (especially true here, as 46% of Ethiopia’s population is under 14 years old!) Some of these precious pastors traveled for 2 days by bus in order to attend this conference, so they’ve been soaking up every teaching like sponges!

Also had the opportunity to visit the construction site of an incredible training center for equipping ex-Muslims who have come to Christ – of which there are 30,000 in Ethiopia alone!  It all started about 10 years ago when a great light appeared at a mosque where 6,000 Muslims had gathered on the day of prayer.  The light was so brilliant the people were afraid & began to panic – but before they could scatter, the light transformed into an appearance of Jesus Christ.  The Lord then told the Muslim Imam, “you have been leading these people from darkness to darkness & from death to death, but if you will obey my instructions you will lead them from darkness to light and from death to life!”

Then get this: Jesus told the Imam that He would appear to him again with further instructions at a later time and for almost 4 years the group (who turned to Christ in mass) continued doing what little they knew – mainly just worshiping Jesus, whom they called ‘Ruah-Allah’ (the Spirit of God).  Sure enough after about 4 years, Jesus appeared to the Imam again and told him the name & address of Pastor Teklu (does this sound like Acts 10:1-6?).  Teklu was able to share the Gospel with them and all 6,000 believed on the Lord for salvation.  In the past 6 years or so, that 10,000 has grown to 30,000 ex-Muslim believers, and Jesus has appeared to one-third of them (an additional 4,000 after the initial group of 6,000).

Teklu has obtained a huge piece of property for a training center on a mountain overlooking a rapidly-growing area of Addis Ababa where the President of Ethiopia is building a house just behind the center.  Once it’s completed (and I’m thrilled to tell you that CLC will be a part of that completion) – his ministry will be able to train 120 ex-Muslims per year and send them out as evangelists to Muslim areas of Ethiopia and other nations as well.  It will also provide a temporary home for some Muslim converts who have to flee for their lives, such as the family from Yemen that I met here this week.

I’ve got more incredible stories to share, but I’ll save that for another post.  Enjoy a few pics I’ve posted below:

British pastor David Shearman has been outstanding in his teaching & a quick friend!

Ethiopia, Day 2

Day 2 of the conference just ended, and it was even better than the first in my opinion.  The pastors & denominational leaders seem hungry for everything we’re sharing, perhaps in part because this time, unlike many conferences I’ve participated in, the leaders requested the subjects in advance.  (In other words, we’re scratching where they itch!)

I shared today about “Ministry Gifts & Measures” and helped them to see that if they want to increase their ‘measure’ of rule (2Cor 10:13-16) & influence & ministry effectiveness, it all begins with increasing their measure of faith (Rom. 12:3), which, according to that verse, has everything to do with how we see ourselves. The only way any of us can ‘see’ ourselves, naturally speaking, is in a mirror.  So I showed the pastors that ONLY the mirror of God’s Word is reliable, unlike the ‘trick’ mirrors we sometimes use: comparison, our past, our inexperience, our unrealistic expectations, etc. But as we embrace what God has said about us, He can use us in greater & greater ways.  I’ve taught this lesson in several nations, but today was exceptionally well-received, and several of the other teachers latched on to it as well, so it became a theme of sorts for the balance of the day.

I’m hearing stories of how God is using people in this nation to make a real impact upon the Muslims of Ethiopia, not only reaching them for Christ but training them to go back into the Muslim world to reach others as well.  There may even be some exciting opportunities for CLC to partner with them in the future, so stay tuned-

As always, thanks for the continued prayers – we’ve got one-and-a-half more days of this conference before flying on to South Africa for the weekend, and I want to make the most of each moment.

Ethiopia, Day 1

Great start to the pastor’s conference here…..the organizers limited the invitation list to about 150 key pastors/leaders and they seemed to soak up everything that was taught today.  My session on “Wisdom for your Ministry” was about as well-received as anything I’ve taught overseas, so I’m grateful for the prayers.  (That was also about the only time all day that I was wide-awake, as jet lag has been kicking my butt & I’ve fought sleep thru everyone else’s sessions.

Tonight we had a 2.5 hour dinner with the speaking team, and I felt like an elementary school kid with some real heavyweights – Dr. David Shibley, Pastor David Shearman from Nottingham, England and Pastor Ron Hibbert from London are ALL men of wisdom & experience – the conversation around the table was worth the whole trip (and we’ve got 3 more days to go!)

Also learned that coffee originated in Ethiopia and according to Pastor Eric (who had several cups throughout the day) it may be the world’s best.  I’m actually tempted to try some myself tomorrow – at least maybe the caffeine would help with the sleepiness.

Thanks for praying for us – hope to keep you posted daily.

Ethiopia!

We arrived safely without any issues & were warmly greeted by Debela Birri, father of CLCer, Kenesa Debela and the founding president of Ethiopia’s only seminary.  Just learned the pastor’s conference will be held at the seminary compound, which is where Kenesa grew up before immigrating to the States – small world!

We’ve got time now for some shut-eye before the conference opens in the morning, about 1am Tuesday (Chicago time).  Excited to be here; excited to introduce Pastor Eric Stone to CLC missions, and SO excited to share the teaching responsibilities with Dr. David Shibley of Global Advance and a couple of pastors from Great Britain……just call me excited!

Sunday reflections

What a day at CLC!  Seems like it’s getting gooder & gooder around the campuses:

  • First report today came from our South Bend campus, where there was a break-in during the night – but as best we can tell, not a thing was stolen! Pastor Shanna says she was awakened about 3 weeks ago with a sense of ‘threat against their building’, specifically involving computers & audio equipment.  She & Doug prayed that night until they sensed a release, and I believe God answered!
  • Additionally, Doug says the message was even better than last week, as The Blind Side helped the congregation to focus on our purpose, and many folks crowded the altar to receive a heart of compassion.  He’s getting great feedback from young & old alike who are enjoying the series!
  • At our Lisle campus, Pastor Eric says it was just a GREAT DAY with a powerful Presence of the Lord from start to finish….many breakthroughs as a result of The Blind Side – love where God is taking us!
  • Where do I start to describe the Tinley Park campus today? First of all, almost 1,400 people worshiped with us in the middle of July, during what we call “summer slump”! That’s actually a high attendance for us in January, and probably represents an all-time record for a July Sunday!  I’d say the “God@the Movies” series idea is working!
  • How ’bout the worship today in all 3 services?  John & Joslyn Brockman were a terrific blessing to us all week, and it was a special treat to have them lead us into His manifest Presence today!  WOW!
  • As to “The Blind Side”, I can’t remember the last time I cried during a movie like that – but it messed me up every time I watched it in preparation for today’s message – and I cried again as I preached.  More importantly, from the response I saw & heard today, I think the Holy Spirit used the movie to move a lot of us – not just to tears, but to action. Remember one of our core values is Compassion: because love acts!
  • Most importantly, I rejoice over at least 10 precious people who prayed to receive Christ today – THAT NEVER GETS OLD!
  • There are just 2 more weeks left in this series, so let me encourage you to invite, invite, invite! I think this next Sunday when my wife looks at “Transformers 3: the Dark Side of the Moon” is going to be off the chain.  I know some of what she’s planning is going to be even more hard-hitting than today – so I dare you to bring a friend!
  • What do you think of the decor’ and the free popcorn?  I’m thinking this is definitely NOT my grandfather’s church!
  • One more thing: special thanks to the anonymous CLCer who paid for my lunch at Culver’s today – when I drove up to pay the bill & make sure our youth got credit for today’s fundraiser, the cashier smiled just like in “Pay it Forward” and said, “the car in front of you paid for your order”!  God & His people keep blessing me!

I made it to O’Hare about an hour ago, only to discover my first flight to Frankfurt, Germany has been delayed by about 75 minutes – so I’ll get some work done at the airport.  Thanks for your prayers – the Global Advance pastor’s conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia begins about 3am Tuesday (Chicago time) and ends about 6am on Friday.  I’ll be sharing the teaching responsibilities with Dr. David Shibley and two British pastors, as well as Pastor Eric from our Lisle campus.  Then Eric & I will fly to South Africa on Saturday morning to be with Pastor Ernest Umanah and explore what God is doing in Jo’burg with CLC – appreciate all the prayer support!

I hope to post daily from Africa, but I’m not sure about internet access at my hotel, so stay tuned-

Ask the Pastor

Another faithful CLCer asks, 1 John 5:16-17 says: ‘If you see a Christian brother or sister sinning in a way that does not lead to death, you should pray, and God will give that person life. But there is a sin that leads to death, and I am not saying you should pray for those who commit it. All wicked actions are sin, but not every sin leads to death.’ So, Pastor Jerry, my question is: Is this verse referring to blaspheming the Holy Spirit? If not, what sin are they referring to that leads to death?”

Great question.  Tough question!

Sometimes (often times?) the simplest answer is the best answer.  In that regard, someone has suggested that the sin that leads to death is the one not repented of.  It’s hard to argue with that wisdom.

However, while it’s simple, I’m not sure it fits the verse, since we couldn’t know by “seeing” whether or not a fellow believer was going to repent of his/her act of sin.

Honestly, the ONLY sin that seems to fit that bill is the one you mention, ‘blasphemy against the Holy Spirit”.  As I scanned various commentaries and scholars, while there were other ideas mentioned (a sin that leads to physical death, for instance, or a sin that brings God’s judgment such as Ananias & Sapphira in Acts 5), the only logical conclusion (to me) is blaspheming the Holy Spirit, as Jesus said in Matthew 12.

Let me quickly add (lest I get a ton of questions from people who think they may have blasphemed the Holy Spirit – which I’ve found is one of Satan’s favorite lies), that in my humble opinion, the sin of blaspheming the Holy Spirit is extremely rare.  For as Jesus described it, in context, blaspheming the Holy Spirit would be attributing the works of the Holy Spirit to Satan.  Furthermore, because of the many believers I’ve met who, prior to being filled with the Holy Spirit, had thought or even declared that it was “of the devil”, I’m convinced that in order to truly blaspheme the Holy Spirit as Jesus described, one would first have to have known better; i.e., only someone who had once been filled with the Spirit but later renounced their experience and attributed it to the work of Satan could be guilty of blaspheming the Holy Spirit. (I find support for that concept in Hebrews 6 – it’s those who have “shared in the Holy Spirit” – other translations say ‘tasted’ – who cannot be restored)

That’s where I am on this admittedly difficult passage.  If one of my readers has insight, by all means, share with us in the comments below-

Hope that helps a bit.  Now, what would YOU like to Ask the Pastor?

People from every nation….

My devotions this morning included Psalm 22:27-28, and in the 1996 edition of the NLT that I read from (sorry, it got changed later), it reads, “The whole earth will acknowledge the LORD and return to him.  People from every nation will bow down before him. For the LORD is king!  He rules all the nations.”

I believe that.

It motivates me to do my part to insure that people from every nation will bow before him.  It’s the real reason why we give 10% of every dollar we receive at CLC.  It’s why Chris & I travel to the nations in leadership training and pastor’s conferences.

It’s also why I leave this Sunday afternoon for Ethiopia, where Global Advance is conducting a conference for some of that country’s emerging young leaders & finest pastors.  My traveling companions will be Pastor Eric Stone from our Lisle campus (making his first CLC missions trip!) and one of CLC’s emerging leaders, Kenesa Debela, who is Ethiopian.  We’ll meet Dr. David Shibley in Addis Ababa, along with some leaders from the British Assembly of God who will complete the speaking team and serve as our hosts for this conference next Tuesday thru Friday.

On Saturday Eric & I will then travel to Johannesburg, South Africa, to minister for Pastor Ernest Umanah (whom you may recall from his January visit to CLC).  Pastor Ernest has persistently asked to become CLC’s next international campus, so this is somewhat of a ‘fact-finding’ trip for Eric & me, as we seek to discern God’s will in all of this.

I write today to ask for your prayers – first, for the conference and the leaders we’ll pour into, and secondly, for wisdom & direction from the Lord concerning CLC’s role in South Africa.

REMEMBER: “the Lord is king!  He rules all the nations.”

By the way, I can’t wait for this Sunday when we see God@the Movies through the lens of “The Blind Side” – invite a friend to join you!

ISRAEL!

I think somehow the Holy Spirit nudges every believer toward a love for Israel, God’s chosen people.

I know the Holy Spirit dealt with me about CLC’s assignment to reach out to the Jewish people.  (I’ve posted here and here and especially here)

That’s why I’m SO excited about welcoming Rabbi Eitan Shishkoff to CLC on Wednesday, July 27 – and why I think you should make every effort to attend (even if you never attend a midweek gathering):

  • Eitan has a dramatic testimony: -ex-hippie from New Mexico who got radically saved in the 1970′s and called by God to return to Israel
  • He started a Messianic synagogue in the Galilee about 15 years ago, and it has now grown to 5 different congregations throughout Galilee in Northern Israel!
  • They operate a distribution center for needy people, along with a soup kitchen, a drug rehab center, an outreach to women in prison & prostitution, and a pro-life counseling office!

I’ve also asked Eitan to talk after service with those who are interested in going to Israel, and we’ll have all the details for our February 2012 CLC Tour!

Mark your calendar and don’t let anything keep you away-

Your missions dollars at work…

We probably don’t say it enough around CLC, but in addition to any designated Steps of Faith missions offerings, we also tithe our income to missions.  In other words, 10 cents of every dollar you give at CLC goes to change lives in missions efforts at home and internationally.

Two weeks ago there was a devastating flash flood in Davao City, Philippines where our first international campus is located.  About 14,000 families were affected, and 30 people were killed, mostly small children.  Even some of the new converts at our campus lost their lives and others lost their possessions.  Our campus pastor immediately mobilized his congregation, with their meager resources, to respond to those families in need, and CLC wired monies to help them – all because of your giving throughout the year that enabled us to respond quickly.

Pastor Herley sent these pics yesterday, along with the thanks of his congregation AND the families we were able to help (who said CLC provided more assistance than their government!) I thought you’d like to see how your dollars are making a difference:

homes were destroyed in moments

Davao CLCers preparing the relief packages

praying with the people before distributing relief

waiting to receive

more than 250 families came for help

Pastor Herley shared the Gospel with those in need

Pastor Nelly serving the hurting

people received eagerly

our joy in helping is matched by their joy in receiving!

Sunday reflections

I’ve got one thing to say about today at CLC: “it’s ON!”

Seriously, we’ve been planning & looking forward to this new series, “God@the Movies” as a pastoral staff for a few months, but I don’t think any of us really knew what to expect.  We do now!  The BUZZ in Tinley Park after each service was absolutely electric, and I can’t recall the last time I had so many comments in the lobby about how the message hit home!  Go Karate Kid! In addition:

  • the stage set design was HOT!  Even with the big makeover still in progress & lots of half-completed construction to distract, our team did an INCREDIBLE job – special kudos to Caleb & Summer Baker, Eduardo Marroquin & Jen McQuay for the HOURS of blood, sweat & tears (not to mention design concepts) to pull it off…..awesome!
  • Maybe the best news of the day (certainly the most important) is that about 15 people prayed to receive Christ, including several first-time guests! I love it when CLCers invite friends to come to church and it results in person’s whole life & eternity being changed!  (Just never gets old!)
  • Even the popcorn was a hit!  Just loved the whole atmosphere today!
  • It was similar at our Lisle campus today, as my wife taught from Karate Kid while the campus pastors were on vacation.  She said there was a long line of people responding for prayer after service, and just a great feel for the whole movie-theme.  In fact, they even served the popcorn at the entrance, so people were munching away while she preached!  [TPers, don't get any ideas - it ain't gonna happen on my watch]
  • Pastor Doug reports that the message from Karate Kid went “surprisingly well” in South Bend, as I said, we weren’t sure how people would receive a Biblical message from a movie – but the feedback afterwards was positive, as folks had fun AND received a message from God’s Word in the process!
  • At our Philippines campus, Pastor Herley reports 785 in attendance with 15 people receiving Christ in their services today.  He also sent pictures of the relief they were able to provide for the victims of the tragic flash flood there, thanks to CLC.  (I’ll do a later post about this).  The people were thankful for the assistance we made possible, which was actually greater than what the Philippine government was able to provide – so I thank CLCers for your generosity all year long that enables us to respond to crisis like these!

Several asked, so here’s the full text of the poem I read today, “DON’T QUIT!”

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,

When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,

When the funds are low and the debts are high,

And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit,

Rest, if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,

As every one of us sometimes learns,

And many a failure turns about,

When he might have won had he stuck it out;

Don’t give up though the pace seems slow–

You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than,

It seems to a faint and faltering man,

Often the struggler has given up,

When he might have captured the victor’s cup,

And he learned too late when the night slipped down,

How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out–

The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,

And you never can tell how close you are,

It may be near when it seems so far,

So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit–

It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.

That’s all for this Sunday…..I’m not sure if it’s the fact that the adrenaline rush is over (or the anointing lifted) or just the fact that I haven’t been doing anything for the past few weeks so my stamina is down – but I’m BEAT!  It sure was GOOD being back home at CLC, though-

Oh – one last thing (the most incredible thing in memory that’s ever happened to me) – one of our CLCers handed me a gift bag after the last service, simply saying, “this is for you, Pastor”. When I got home after lunch & opened it up, it was an iPad2 & a leather cover! I’m still in SHOCK…..I don’t ever recall a ‘no occasion’ gift of that magnitude in my life…..but I’m grateful.  Thank you, T.E., thank you!

Ask the Pastor

A faithful CLCer writes, “Let me start off by saying: That I love this church and my walk with Christ has grown tremendously since I started going here. I have never attended a service here where I wasn’t able to extract something from the message and apply it to my life. That being said my question is this: Why doesn’t CLC have a singles ministry? I know there is a singles lifegroup that I am a part of and enjoy dearly, but there are other issues that singles, divorced, and widowed individuals go through that need as much attention as those issues that face the family unit. I believe that the enemy’s attack on families begins with the attack on singlehood; singles are not taught to treasure this season and nurture their relationship with God and then they get married and long for this period of their life back again. Singles are often times made to feel that something is wrong with them and even worse, they are made to feel like a disease that needs to be cured. The feelings of inadequacy is not cured in marriage , it’s only exaggerated even more. Family ministry is a big part of CLC, but is there an urgency to minister to this population? Thanks for your time and all you do to make this a wonderful church home!!!”

Hmmmm…..interesting question.  While I completely agree with your description of the attack on singles and the need to counteract it effectively, I’m not totally sure I understand what you’re asking, but I’ll give it my best shot:

Every church operates by some sort of philosophy or strategy (even a lack of strategy is a strategy!) At CLC, one of our guiding core values is the importance of relationships, and the fact that we grow best in relationship with others.  For that reason, we try to incorporate small groups into virtually every area of ministry – as opposed to having people just come to listen to a lecture by Bro. or Sis. Wonderful.  We’d much rather they connect with others, interact together over a particular area of interest, and build friendships for life!  I’m NOT opposed to large gatherings or great conferences (we have sponsored some in the past, and will likely do so again) – but that’s not where we choose to focus our efforts.  We believe people grow best in relationship, so we try to create environments (small groups) where they are most likely to make those connections and build those relationships.  As you said, we have a great single’s small group with a passionate leader, not to mention other groups with a tighter focus on single parents or divorce recovery, etc.

So if the question is why we don’t have a single’s “ministry” in the sense of large gatherings on a weekly or monthly basis, I would say that if you look around, we don’t have a married’s ministry or a men’s ministry or a women’s ministry either.  All of those important segments of the congregation also meet in small groups, for the same reasons I listed in the paragraph above.  Probably the closest thing to a traditional ‘ministry’ would be Heart 2 Heart, but even there, the real focus of the ministry is the break-out times with a small group of ladies who apply the teachings, connect with each other, and hopefully build great friendships that extend far beyond the midweek gathering.

As pastor of CLC, I certainly value single adults.  We may not always do the best job of making sure each message has application to the challenges that singles face today, but I can assure you that it’s not for lack of effort.  I haven’t run the numbers on our database, but my eyeballs tell me that perhaps a majority of CLCers would be in the ‘singles’ category: widowed, divorced or never-married.  So singles are a HUGE part of our family, and certainly we feel an urgency to minister to the needs you describe so well in your question.

What I say to you I say to all: if you have specific requests or suggestions to enhance our efforts to effectively minister, by all means, share them with usWe’ve never offended to get ideas from the congregation, and some of our best ideas have come from people who saw a need and a way for us to fill it.

I hope that helped.  If I missed the point of your question entirely, please let me know, and I’ll try again.

Sunday reflections

Well, this was our last weekend away….and I could wish this kind of holiday for each one of you: we’ve had plenty to eat; plenty of time lazing around the backyard pool at my in-law’s, and best of all, plenty of FAMILY time, just enjoying each other. Now, that’s  a GREAT vacation, as you can tell:

I did manage to visit another church in metro Detroit last night and watch all 3 CLC services online today, and I gotta tell you again: I love my church! You guys are simply the best, and I genuinely enjoyed worshipping online (although nothing beats being there in person!!!)

I was once again proud of my ‘sons’: my youngest son Brent kept us engaged with the missions theme at 8am; my spiritual son Pastor Jaime preached it at 9:30am; and my ‘newest’ son, Sam Hamstra, simply got in our face about the path we take in life toward our God-given destiny (there is a cost, but it’s so worth it!)

Am I the only one that noticed this next generation isn’t timid about the Gospel & they don’t back away from challenging all of us to live it out each day?

Since it IS missions Sunday today, let me mention that our Davao, Philippines campus was affected by the flash flood there last week. While their building wasn’t damaged, one of their newest converts from Islam was drowned along with two of her sisters, and several of our members lost possessions.  Pastor Herley is already leading a relief effort for the families who were affected, and I promised him our help.  If you wish to make an online donation, you can do so here.  Thanks for your compassion AND your generosity!

Can’t wait to see all of you next week when we begin our “God@the Movies” series with a look at Karate Kid…hope you’ll invite someone to be your guest this week!

I’ve asked our pastors from around the campuses to leave comments from their services below, and if you were a part of a CLC experience today, I’d love to hear from you, too

Ask the Pastor

A faithful CLCer writes, “A friend of my deceased son recently told me about a dream in which he came to her and said that he was “now” in Heaven, even though he has been deceased for 18 months.  I remember lessons about purgatory and wonder what your feelings are about death and resurrection.  Is there a transition period for unfinished business, or do you believe that souls go to Heaven at the time of death?”

Great question, and I appreciate you asking, because I know many people have similar questions and ideas about the “after life”, so I’m happy to address this, in order:

1.  Probably a good starting place is for us to understand that dreams and other subjective experiences, while they may be comforting or troubling, are certainly not infallible and do not represent authoritative truth.  ONLY God’s Word can be the final authority on any subject.  So while I cannot deny your friend’s experience, neither can I draw any definite conclusions from her dream.  I think it’s important for you, and for anyone reading this to begin with that starting place – that God’s Word is THE final authority and anything that contradicts it must be rejected.  In the words of Scripture (Romans 3:4), “Even if everyone else is a liar, God is true”

2.  So with that starting point, I can tell you that the word purgatory or even the concept of a purgatory is NOT found anywhere in Scripture.  It seems to have been a doctrine introduced by the Roman Catholic church perhaps a thousand or more years after Christ’s death and the writing of the New Testament. So if I am to base my beliefs on Scripture alone, there unequivocally I can say that there is NO transition period for unfinished business.

3.  What was true before Christ (and perhaps is still true for unbelievers today) is that after death, the souls of men waited in a place of rest until their final judgment.  This was the Jewish teaching about Hades – with one ‘compartment’ sometimes referred to as “Abraham’s bosom”, where the righteous dead would wait their reward, while another ‘compartment’ was where the unrighteous awaited their judgment.

4.  However, after His death, Scripture says that Christ led a “crowd of captives” (Ephesians 4:8), and this is no doubt a reference to those righteous dead, whom Jesus led away to heaven, to enjoy their eternal reward.  Since that time, Scripture seems very clear that a believer who dies goes IMMEDIATELY into the Presence of the Lord in heaven  (see 2Cor. 5:1-8) – when we are absent from the body, we are present with the Lord! Based on that truth of Scripture, I certainly believe that all believers go to heaven immediately upon their death!

I hope this not only clears up those questions, but that it also brings some comfort to your heart.

Sunday reflections

Chris & I are thoroughly enjoying this time in the Smokies – just drinking in the view from our cabin, reading a LOT of mystery novels, and relaxing with ‘the boys’ (Jasper & Pedro). We generally only leave the cabin once a day to try a restaurant – today Chris said this was the best barbecue she’d ever eaten (just trying to help if you’re ever down this way).

We tuned in to all 3 online services today to enjoy our up-and-coming leaders, Jen, Eduardo & Michael as they brought the Word – and I thought they fed all of us spiritually as well as Bennett’s fed Chris & me.  Once again, I was a PROUD father and a proud pastor!

I’m asking our campus pastors to leave their comments about their service below – but if you attended ANY CLC service today, feel free to leave your thoughts as well.

Now I’m headed back to my novel……have a great week!
